I don't think that's chlorosis. With chlorosis you get really dark veining against a yellow/pale green background. If you google chlorosis and look at images, it's very easy to see the dark veins. I don't see any veining on your yellowing leaves. It looks like blackspot to me--at least in some of the leaves. Another sign is that you said it showed up after the spring flush which is usually when blackspot sets in here. It seems like the effort of blooming weakens the plants resistance.

I believe that B.S. looks different on different roses, to some degree. This is how my Marie Pavie looks when it gets B.S., while on other roses the spots are darker and more distinctively separate spots. I live near Birmingham Alabama where the B.S. pressure is high and I don't spray....so I always live with some B.S.

I also believe that B.S. is a series of related strains, so this may also explain why it looks different from rose to rose.

I agree, it's blackspot. Marie needs spraying in my climate.

I'd like to see a much closer view of individual leaves before offering any kind of diagnosis. At a distance, that does not look like Blackspot to me. It looks more like Cercospora or Anthracnose.

A sharply-focused closeup would be good to make sure, but I think I'm seeing notchy-fringy edges on the spots.

Cercospora is a major disease in my garden, but I don't recall Marie having any. I'd guess it's too hot in Florida for anthracnose to spread during the spring months.

Marie will do that until she is about 3-4 years old and then she will stop giving in to fungi (or that has been my experience). I always gave her a shot of iron or some miracle acid when she got like that and she would push off those fungused leaves and put on new green ones.

I am just becoming aware of anthranose. Last year The MacCartney rose had it so I moved it to 100% sun. It's showing a little but so far, not bad. I want Marie Pavie so much - hope it's fixable problem.

Thank you all very much. Patricia, I'm happy to hear she grows out of it for you. I will do as you say and give her a boost. It's been in the mid to upper 80s here and about 60 or just under at night with NO rain - and none to speak of expected until June. It's reasonable that she's a little weaker after her bloom. She's had plenty of watering. It's interesting how I'm seeing that generally that seems to be the case with the roses I have. They're either getting ready to grow or just bloomed, cycling through. To my mind, BS looked at that way doesn't seem as bad. It's a by-product of growth - at least with the Teas, Chinas & Noisettes and, I guess, some other heat loving roses. Looking at it that way prevents me from panicking and saves the lives of many roses who don't know any better.

Pardon my nosiness, newbie q -- so are you going to some kind of fungicide on your Marie Pavie?
(Just curious, and if the first choice would be a homemade remedy like baking soda, or a commercial spray).

No, ajpa, no fungicides - homemade or otherwise. Too lazy and I'm afraid it would kill the good fungus in the soil. I'm hoping she'll move on to her next phase - leafing out again and reblooming and that this will be a passing thing occasionally.

Sherry, I have Marie Pavie's from two different sources and at times they have both gotten a touch of whatever that is. My older Marie Pavie always gets past it on its own, no help from me. And when I saw some leaves on my new Marie Pavie's with that, I just pulled those leaves off and there is already lots of new growth taking its place. For me, whatever it is, it seems to only happen some times, and does not last long. There is a mature Marie Pavie at a local public garden that never has it ... it's always clean as a whistle every time I vist that garden, so it may indeed be something that the rose gets over as it gets better established.

Well I went to go get a picture and to my surprise it was full of all new growth! Mine did look exactly like that though. I hope it stays away as it just looks terrible. It never really bloomed this spring either but now I see lots of buds among the new growth. Hopefully yours will clean up too! ~Meghan

My 2 Maries have always looked pretty much like that--not a pretty sight! Mine are approx 5 years old, so maturity is probably not a factor. I plan to shovel prune one of them and transplant the other. They are planted side-by-side and only get morning sun. The one I will transplant will go into full sun. I don't spray any of my roses so if they can't look good without a spray program, out they go!

Mature plants of 'Marie Pavie' do not get this problem, so just wait and watch. Its a superb rose.

Molly, I have one in full sun and one that gets shade in late afternoon. The full-sun plant is worse. I'll wait for them to mature. I also gave them each some ironite a couple of days ago, and I need to go pull off the yellow leaves.

Well, sounds like there is still hope for my Marie. I thought 5/6 years would be considered mature, but perhaps not, huh? I have applied soil sulfur to several plants thru the years, but MP has never responded with greener, healthier foliage. I may just have a bad clone and perhaps I should start with a new MP altogether.
