Using 3 wires on a 4 wire cable?
Comments (3)I don't know if it's permissible (and I don't think it looks as nice) but when wiring lv alarm wiring, we often cut off unused wires flush with the outer insulation. You will also see alarm, telephone and other lv wires with spares wrapped back around up the outer insulation. In 120/240 land, I'm sure capping is preferred. If one of the other conductors fails in the future, the 'spare' wire can be brought into service provided it's re-coloured at the ends to depict what it's doing, ie, red or black....See More220v single phase 3 wire or 4 wire for generator
Comments (1)"OK I understand that the red is 110volt black is 110volt..." What are you measuring black and red to for 120 V? THAT is what the white (AKA neutral) is for. It is the second conductor needed for the 120 V lines. US AC power is 120/240 V. Black to red is 240 volts. Black to white is 120 V. Red to white is 120 V. Green is the safety ground and NOT a power conductor. The ground should ONLY conduct current when a fault occurs....See MoreCooktop - 2 wire to 220v 3 wire
Comments (11)I've been wondering why they didn't do this a long, long time ago. We've got a lot of older grandfathered 3-wire installations, but code now wants 4-wire receptacles, with ground/neutral seperate. Alright, fine, but I always wondered: Why do we have 120/240 appliances anyway? Clothes dryers tend to have a 120V motor, but I can see no reason not to use a 240V motor instead. I can't see anything in a typical range that uses 120, with the possible exception of some of the electronic controls on modern ovens, which are low-voltage internally anyway, so if you're gonna use a 120-to-whatever transformer, why not a 240-to-whatever one? It would seem, to me, a lot simpler a solution!...See More6-2 vs 6-3 wire for range
Comments (4)You are only required to upgrade the range circuit to 3 wire (plus ground) if you alter the circuit. If the new range calls for the same size (amps) circuit you can continue to use it with a 2 wire (plus ground) plug. Some AHJs will consider simply moving the receptacle an alteration, others do not. This can be an issue since the allowed location for a new range for the receptacle may not match the existing location....See MoreRon Natalie
