Seems kind of rich to me. But I bet a little bit would be good. Almost looks like french onion soup.

It looks real good to me but a bit heavy for Thanksgiving if you are already serving the traditional, potatoes, stuffing, sweet potatoes and pie. Something I would try out at a potluck.

I haven't made it but agree that it would be too heavy/rich and cheese-laden to serve with a "traditional" turkey T-day dinner. It sounds like a creamy French onion soup on steroids. :)

Cheesy Onion Casserole
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 15 min. Bake: 30 min.
YIELD:8 servings

Ingredients

• 3 large sweet or white onions, sliced
• 2 tablespoons butter
• 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded Swiss cheese, divided
• Pepper to taste
• 1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted
• 2/3 cup milk
• 1 teaspoon soy sauce
• 8 slices French bread, buttered on both sides

Directions

• 1.
  In
  a skillet, saute onions in butter until transparent and slightly
  browned. Layer onions, two-thirds of the cheese and the pepper in a
  2-qt. baking dish.
• 2.
  In a small saucepan, combine the soup, milk and soy sauce until
  blended; heat through. Pour over casserole and stir gently. Top with
  bread slices.
• 3.
  Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 15 minutes. Press bread slices down

It looks to be heavy and greasy too. A lighter choice would be something along the lines of a French onion tarte. Like a quiche but with onions. I'm sure not as much cheese, no 8 slices of double buttered bread and with the bulk coming from fluffy beaten eggs.

I wouldn't use cream soup.

JoAnn, I'm not being critical of anyone who enjoys eating food like that. But I could never put something like that into my mouth. The sodium alone....ai yi yi!

I'm just taken aback by a recipe like that. I've never been around such food.

I made it and it was good, everyone liked it. It was not heavy either. If I were to make it again I would slice the onions in half because the strings were too long.

That looks sooooo good. I'd love it with the sweet Vidalia onions and I love cheese, cheese and more cheese.

Looks rich and cheesy, but I don't think I'd make it for a holiday occasion. But maybe for a stand-alone entrée some weekend night?? (With a salad?)

I do remember that my mother used to make a creamed onion casserole for special events that we all used to love. I don't have her recipe, but it was very much like THIS one, from the Food Network. I seem to remember a light crunchy crumb topping.
