Thanksgiving Cactus blooming at other times?
Comments (23)Telling the differance between the holiday cactus is really confusing for a lot of people, usually people are refering to the same plant when they say Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus. These are what's available in stores between Thanksgiving and Christmas and have the wide leaf segments with jagged edges . But the true Christmas cactus are the ones with slim smooth edge segments and tend to hang down and these are what have been passed down through the generations and can seldom be found to purchase retail. Easter/Spring cactus are usually sold between Easter and Mothers day around here and the plant looks a lot like the real Christmas cactus but the flowers are very differant and they open and close up each day. My Thanksgiving cactus start blooming around the first of November and bloom through December than rest for a few weeks and than bloom again but not as many flowers and my Christmas cactus are starting to bloom now. It's still a bit early for Easter cactus to be blooming in most areas. I grow all three types and once you see them side by side it's really easy to tell the differance. Comments (19)Seagrass, DH was working while we listened, but I don’t think he would like it at all (which is why I played it then).:Too folk-y and silly for him. He’s a Canadian and always says he doesn’t feel like this is his holiday, but then he doesn’t like if we do anything for Canadian T’giving other than go to his family up nort’ dere. His mom is a Brit but picked up on Canadian T’giving, so we wish each other Happy Thanksgiving. DH is happy to eat turkey and fixin’s though. Shrug. I know my brother was just being silly, it was certainly not the usual reception to our home! Comments (10)I love you guys too. :) plllog, about the stupid places that boxes are left after delivery: I just got a large heavy box delivered directly in front of my storm door. Do you know how hard it is to open a storm door that's being blocked by a huge heavy box? Thankfully that's only the third time it's been done to me. lol! neely, your plated meal is gorgeous! I only thought to take one photo of any of the food I made. The obligatory dinner rolls that are actually destined as leftover turkey sandwiches. :) Annie, I'm glad to hear that all is well there and your dinner with Elery sounds lovely. I can't even remember the last time I enjoyed a meal with an atmosphere like that............... agmss, it sounds like your nephew is a cooking phenom! That's a shame about the make-ahead blueberries. I had a similar disaster once when I attempted a make-ahead cheesey-creamy topping for an onion flambe. :p My butter/herb turkey breast was wonderful!!! The only drawback was a lack of drippings to make good gravy for my BF.... had to use the stuff that came in a package with the turkey....See More

8 years agoI already had Thanksgiving! I had to do recipes for my blog and last week was the turkey. It took me so long to get it all coordinated because I had to explain how I stuff the turkey because I put my Sourdough Mushroom stuffing between the breast meat and the skin plus inside the cavity. It's the Jayne Mansfield of turkeys.
But I've done it this way for 25 years. Always make the same meal: Turkey stuffed under the skin and in the cavity, sweet potatoes with pineapple, fresh cranberry sauce with orange. This year I added buttermilk cloverleaf rolls. I swear I gained 5 pound eating those rolls hot. I change the desserts each time. Sometimes apple pie. Sometimes pumpkin pie but lately I haven't been liking the pumpkin pie so I need to work on that one. My mom made the greatest Tday dessert -- it was pumpkin ice cream cake with caramel sauce.
Usually do a fresh turkey. Love those. But this year because it's 3 weeks before T day and no one has fresh turkeys in yet. I should have gone after one of the turkeys that appear on our lawn every October. Usually we see them the first week. This time they came back and back so we must have good worms. I heard some noise outside and they came to visit.
I have 3 quarts of turkey broth in the fridge and the turkey bits all off the bone. So it will be soup tomorrow or Friday. DH is getting sandwiches tomorrow whether he likes it or not! Two neighbors got turkey meals already with the sourdough mushrooms stuffing.
Since it's over already, we'll hide this year but we'll meet some friends for lunch on Saturday.
