Off topic: Thanksgiving cactus ready to bloom
Comments (5)I consider myself lucky since I live in So Cal. I have many temperature tolerant orchids as well as approximately 10 Christmas cactus. They are all setting bud and will bloom for Thanksgiving. I have always heard that the shortening of the day and cooler weather initiates bud set as with Phal's. I never touch them as far as repotting since I want them to grow into specimens as several of them are, Once in a while the cats will knock one over or it will get to heavy for the hanger and fall. Then a piece will break off so I can start a new plant. I also have an Easter cactus that reliably blooms around Easter time....See MoreChristmas cactus blooms (Thanksgiving cactus really)
Comments (9)Hiya Cyirra and all, Congrats on the blooms! They're really, really lovely! I don't have any of the yellow/gold types so it's really fun to see yours. What conditions are you growing yours in? I still have the one in these older pics ('Dark Marie')--it's in my den right now and is budding up nicely (and making a couple of early blooms each week too). Here's a pic of one of the early blooms from this week, it will make its larger flush in a month or three. I've gone a bit overboard with Christmas cacti over the last couple of years, but they're so durable, and they love it here (indoors) and they bloom regularly for me (although often not until mid to late winter) so why not, right?? Here's a pic of a small rescue plant I got two years ago as an utterly wilted MESS with only five segments. Some bright light and occasional water have helped it revive. Happy gardening indoors and out everyone, and tomato, please post pics of yours when they bloom! Grant...See MoreRight on time Thanksgiving Cactus!
Comments (11)I am not having much luck with my older Thanksgiving Cactus blooming this year. They were a little neglected as we traveled a lot this summer. However, my Christmas Cactus is early and I have a few blooms on it. I also treated myself to a few new ones last Friday. Beach Dancer Maruska Pink NOID The lady at the nursery also gave me some cuttings of Christen (or Cristin). We also got a new kitten. Thus the plastic forks sticking out of my other plants. She was rolling and playing in them. So far the forks have worked. We also got a squirt bottle to keep her off of the table....See MoreIt's Thanksgiving Cactus time! Are yours budding in time?
Comments (85)Hello! I am new here, but I also love these lovelies. In Latvian shops unfortunately we don't have labelled Schlums. They are sold as "Christmas cactus" and the shop assistant looks at you weird if you call it "Thanksgiving cactus". I guess it's because we don't celebrate Thanksgiving and not everyone has given a thought about schlums. Today I asked if they know names for schlums they are selling. The answer was no, there isn't any label to see where it has come from so my cacti are NOID, but I have tried to ID some by looking at photos. Today I think I bought "Samba Brazil" *squeals*, I will post photos tomorrow. Today I want to post photos of two I have no idea what they are called. Since files were huge I put links. Perhaps you could play ID for me please? Maybe there is someone who can ID them just looking at photos *looking around hopefully* Yellow one: http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0001.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0002.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0003.jpg.html Orange: http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0004.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0005.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0006.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0007.jpg.html http://s141.photobucket.com/user/brunhilde100/media/Schlumbergera/DSC_0008.jpg.html This post was edited by Lii-sama on Fri, Jan 3, 14 at 15:01...See MoreMentha
