I really like to think of decorating a toddler's room but I found that too much stuff made my children rampaging crazy. I kept the noise and visual level low because I wanted them to go to bed when it was bed time. I noticed my son and his wife don't do that, and neither does my daughter with her 18 month old. I remember going over the day with my toddlers, even though they couldn't really communicate when only 12 months old, I felt that they understood. Then reading my toddlers a book while they played, in their beds, with small stuff toys that were selected for bed time only and only for 15 minutes. Putting away the toys, scratching backs and then it was the windup music box and dim lights. They were asleep in minutes of me leaving their room. My children and their spouses have a challenge ever single day to get their kids to go to bed. I think the human brain must have a gears and a clutch in it, like a car. Little children's brains are always running at the highest gear and they need a bit of time to slow down so they can park and recharge for the night. about 20 minutes does it. By the time they are in school, they accept bedtime without argument. Of course, there is nothing that can make a teenager go to bed at a decent hour.

LOVE all these ideas! I am buying many of them for my nieces, who live in Minnesota. My husband and I live in the Arizona desert, and we'd love to introduce them to the fascinating world of cacti and mountains - thanks for the great suggestions!
