My Experience with Kordes roses
Comments (19)Jim, I realy debated getting Elveshorn and Elmshorn. Could you please tell me anything about these two. I have in the back of my mind that they are prone to mildew? Maybe I am wrong. Also how hardy is Elmshorn? Do you winter protect it. I think I looked into the rose when you (I think it was you) posted that you were so frustrated with roses but that this rose was doing ok compared to others. These two roses have been on my list on and off . For all your past posts, pics and information on roses. THANKS!!! Amy...See MoreKordes Florentina companion roses
Comments (5)Hmmm. I wouldn't have thought to put a true red rose like Florentina with peachy roses... but if you like those colors together it would look great. Is something like this what you're envisioning? Totally different roses, but when I searched for red and peach roses this photo came up from https://www.gapphotos.com/imagedetails.asp?view=rosa-flammentanz-rosa-belvedere-rosa-medley-pink-rosa-geoff-hamilton-geranium-gracile-sirak-phalaris-and-salvia-microphylla-in-mixed-summer-border-&imageno=126185 If you want more of a "fire" toned rose bed, then the yellow could work with the combo too. You would just have to tie it all in with some other companions below. All depends on what you're going for I guess. I have my Florentinas climbing a fence together with another single red climber, Bloomfield Courage (once blooming) and also with a huge white climber, Sombreuil. In front I have pink supreme carpet roses and purple/blue nepeta as companions. Totally different look than your plans... but both can be beautiful. :-)...See MoreAny updates on climbing Kordes Rose Kiss Me Kate
Comments (5)Hi - I planted a KMK by my porch this spring - she is growing (canes about 3.5-4ft tall), but no blooms yet. I am also interested in how tall she has grown from folks who have had her for a few years. I see varying reports on her height from rose selling sites, Would love to hear more in general about her (height, blooming, habit/form, disease resistanece, etc) from folks with actual experience with her now that she has been out a few years. I am in 7b so do not expect a huge amount of winter die off, but always worry about BS and pests here in steamy ATL....See MoreDavid Austin roses vs kordes roses
Comments (52)I have a loamy clay here in zone 6. I have tried a number of Austins and I loved them, but I usually ended up with some kind of foliage issue. It's been awhile, so I don't remember what. I keep trying different roses that are thought to be good in a no spray garden and last spring I planted - Savannah and Beverly and Pope John Paul. Savannah is a Kordes - my first. It was enjoyable in it's first season. Pretty foliage and I liked the color and texture of the blooms. It didn't grow too much or produce many flowers, but I didn't expect a lot in it's first year starting off bare root from Palatine. But by the end of the season, it was suddenly showing some problem with one of the canes. Not insects, but disease. I left it alone and just hoped for the best this spring. This spring, it had some leaf buds on it, but they deteriorated as soon as they opened and while the other roses were pushing out more buds and then opening leaves, Savannah did nothing and looked worse. So I decided to cut all the canes back to the ground. And I thought that was the end of it really, but to my surprise, it sprouted new canes - about 3 of them. Right now it's about 6-8" tall and has leafed out and looks okay. Not a great start for a rose though. Beverly is another Kordes and last year it did fine and produced more flowers than Savannah and looked healthy. This year it has filled out with leaves. I usually have roses starting to open by June 1st, so, we'll see how it does this year. The foliage looked clean all season last year and so far this year too. Maybe by the end of this season I'll be able to make a better comparison....See MoreCori Ann - H0uzz violated my privacy
