Yes to both. I try to convince any client doing fans to light the room separately from the fan. Just make sure the ceiling lighting is clear of the fan blades to avoid any flickering.

I prefer a ceiling fan light along WITH recessed lighting as that expands my options for lighting things up, but I can certainly see a fan without a light being perfectly fine with the canned lights as well.

I have a ceiling fan with bottom lights ( spot led) with adjustable spots and are removable. We like them. It also has a top light which we use quite often. Fan and lights are 100% remote controlled. It's an Ellington brand. Ellington has several fans without lights, but are light compatible for future consideration. When building this house, I found two of these for $10 each on CL, new in box.

The recessed ceiling lights are adjustable eyeball fitted with dimmable Cree LED BR20 bulbs.

For the living areas I have recessed lights on dimmers and ceiling fans with no lights. The bedrooms have ceiling fans with lights as well as table lamps.

In the keeping room we have a ceiling fan without lights, can lights, and table lamps. Rarely turn the can lights on. Don't care for overhead lighting in that situation.

We also have a ceiling fan without a light and can lights in the ceiling of our keeping room next to the kitchen. We have no overhead lighting in our living room. The can lights are on a dimmer and can lend a nice soft glow if I want that. Of course, table lamps, too. I really dislike lights on ceiling fans.

I have a ceiling fan without lights in my vaulted LR. It's the same color as the walls/ceiling and is only there because I have no A/C and need it to move air around. I don't have any overhead lights in the LR, just lamps on tables.

I prefer fans without lights. but, I do like a ceiling light so that a switch can be flipped to turn them on before entering a room...

our current family room has a ceiling fan that has an 'up light'... shines a light on the ceiling and is above the fan blades-- I really dislike that fan light, because when both light and fan are on you get the constant 'strobe' like effect (for lack of a better descriptive word!) as the fan blades turn...
