I like the fixture you chose, the Uplighting will help considerably.

Do you need a fan?

Personally, I never choose fixtures with bulbs exposed. No one wants to look into the light.

Something grand and up lighting will be appropriate.

additional llighting will help balance the room, layers of lighting is mood changing, alot to think about. good luck.

I would love to see a bit more of the room... personally, I would add a large piece of art over that arched doorway... (where it looks like natural light shines on the wall from a window?)

it would be at eye level while standing on the floor on the top of the stairway. Looks like a beauty of a room.

Thank you Lyn! I agree. We love the room. We changed the flooring this month and that spurred the desire the change lighting as well.

Choose a properly size chandelier (length + width in feet and converted to inches) which will throw light up on the ceiling as well as down into the room.

We live in TX and do occasionally use the fan. But not frequently enough to make that a mandatory need. We use the centralized AC more.

Yikes, those huge fans. I’d be afraid to sit under that second one. Hope the furniture is bolted down.

I’m in Texas and hate ceiling fans blowing on me in any room, but any I’ve had in any room were normal size and worked fine, warehouse size not necessary.

Anyway, do you use the fan, OP? If it’s not needed, yes, I’d get a light you like. I prefer lamps in rooms, but like overhead lights for certain situations … like looking for cat yak after I heard it from another room.

Thanks Jinx. Yes, I do want to change out the fans. They came with the house. But undecided on the light fixture. Our furniture is traditional. So, want to stick to something traditional. The chandelier in my original post is most similar to the one I have in the foyer. So, I thought it might look consistent. But I am open to other ideas as well.

Thank you BeverlyFLADeziner for the detailed response. I do have one large painting on the wall beside the fireplace. I have 4 large lamps spread out in the room but it still feels dark. So, wondering if I should get recess lights (Again, tall ceiling may reduce the impact) or go for a big light fixture.

Re: the light linked in your op … I’d be concerned with uplights that height due to dust, bugs, etc. My preference would be downlights and/or recessed, for both form and function.

Right now you almost have to go back to school figure out LED light bulbs to accommodate table lamps in big rooms. DO NOT SELECT A BULB THAT IS COMPARABLE TO A 60 WATT.

You wouldn't have used that when we had incandescent bulbs. I had to order my 3 way LED light bulbs from Amazon to get what I needed 50/100/150 equivalent LED bulbs only take 16watts. Seems the big box stores don't carry 3 way bulbs in LED. Maybe ACE but not HD or Lowes.

Changing out the bulbs is a lot less expensive than calling in an electrician. You'll be pleased with the results.

a vaulted ceiling room is so hard to control the temperature, so a fan is WAY more practical here. light the room with lots of lamps, sconces. or have can lighting or tracks installed.

Thank you SeattleMCM. I felt since the ceiling was 20 ft, the canned lighting may not effectively light up the room. I currently have one above the fireplace but even with the brightest LED bulb I could find, its provides only a soft light at the eye level.

Stop the presses where is the furniture, art, rugs etc, you can decide nothing without context.

If I purchased your house, the first thing I would do is add some recessed lights (with dimmers) in that room. I would remove the fan or update to something more transitional and without lights. I don't think fans should be the first thing you notice when you walk into a room! Add other lighting for different tasks and looks - table lamps, floor lamps, sconces.
