1940's, 10ft ceiling living room - need furniture help!
We have a 1200 sq ft. living room. 10ft ceilings, 1 bay window arched doorways, wood floors. We've been in the house for over a year and currently have furniture in it that we brought from our prior home, but it needs to either be refurnished or replaced. I need help on decoration and furniture placement! Should I stick w/ the classic look of the low-back couch and wing-backed chair and get them refurnished or should we purchase new furniture? We've got three small kids so it has to be kid-friendly.

Comments (45)First, I think the 42/18 cabinet proportion works. But in general, I try to not take cabinets to a 10' ceiling. I did it in the photo I posted because they were spec houses and the builder wanted two different looks. I prefer the option where the cabinets do not go to the ceiling. I do not think the other option is as successful in regards to proportion (it feels top heavy). This is another example of where I took the cabinets to a 10' ceiling: I think this one is more successful because it's larger, has a mix of closed cabinets and open shelving and is balanced by a very large window. I think good scale and proportion can be overlooked in design in favor of the notion that cabinets HAVE to go to the ceiling. Comments (10)Wow! Those windows going out to the porch are beautiful. What a great view! I think you should have two separate sitting areas because the smaller chairs don’t work with the larger chair. I love how the larger chair looks with your sofa and pillows...just lovely! Is there room to remove the end table on the right and slide the rug, sofa, and big chair down a couple of feet? And keep the big chair angled towards sofa like in the first photo...away from the chase part. Then I would leave the two smaller chairs under the opening but pull them out a bit so that sitting area stands in it’s on. Comments (46)Talked to builder the reason there is drywall space on the 2 story great room between the windows is because the roof overhang with the covered deck would not allow them to add more than 2 smaller windows in the mid drywall area. As it is now we will have 4 3x6 windows near the ceiling and 4 3x6 closer to floor. A suggestion was add 1 foot transoms to windows closer to the floor but theres no room to add them to the windows closer to the ceiling. So the choice is leave alone as they are now drywall space will be approx 3 and a half feet or add transoms lower windows only and have 2 and a half drywall feet. What would look best ? These sre the only options unless we centered 2 smaller windows in middle of drywall which im not sure about. its a nice space w/great lighting. What is the room used for?
I see a piano. how about a spot where someone could play and seating for others to listen?
I see a TV, so I'm guessing this is also the tv room? And the kids playroom?
when you have guests or family over, is this where everyone sits?
What is your style? what would you like to see?
Are you up for painting?
what about the fireplace brick? do you want to keep it as is?
I have a whole slew of pictures of similar fireplaces, bookshelves and furniture layout. let me show you a grip of them and you can provide feedback.
this is basically what you have now. In this one they've placed the sofa facing the fp. this isn't my fave because it looks like a mosh-pit of items, but it can give you an idea.
I'm going to show you some fireplaces where the brick has been painted, or retiled. Up to you what you want to do. You could paint that gold insert and give it an updated look.
this layout, could be yours. take your bookshelves up to the ceiling, like this:
find a similar sofa or even a sectional and face it toward the FP. bring in coordinating chairs, pillows and a rug. Here they've painted white, but you'll see other wall colors
since you have the room, you could do two sofas like this, with a large ottoman in the middle, and two arm chairs like so:
notice light fixture, book shelves up to the ceiling, art over the FP, double sofas
with your high ceilings, a coffered ceiling and paint color like this would look amazing. notice the furniture layout on this one.
And that boob light has to go! please consider a semi-flush mount chandelier for your lighting.sofa facing fp, console behind it, and painted beams on the ceiling. (this isn't enough for your room, so I'm just showing you some other ideas)
on the other side, you could set up a little convo area for listening to piano music, or put a larger table in the middle for games and puzzles. make sure you have ample storage or containers to hold all the toys.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agothe tile hearth is very simple to replace. chip it out, and replace with whatever you like.
you can find porcelain tiles that look like the thick cement tiles now. the ones w/the cool patterns on them. use those is your like or pick a natural stone like marble or basalt.
Here they've painted the brick white (use a paint meant for brick. masonry paint lets the brick 'breathe'. Rombaio is a brand you could research. they have paints and stains)putting in a nice, thick natural wood mantel would also look nice
this look? you could do the blue/white tiles.
you could also do a split faced quartzite tile and go all the way to the ceiling (ditto book shelves)
I like this one. love the black brick. your room has lots of light and is very large. this is something you can easily get away with. plus the black looks killer w/the flooring. (don't forget to spray the brass insert! it's an easy DIY)
I'd prob redo the wall color in a creamy white and use your yellows in art and pillows.Bring in a nice, navy sectional since you like the blue
redo the fireplace in a blue/white tile, with larger shelves, and you'd get this
you could also paint the brick black, and put in a white surround. Also redo the book cases so they're a bit more substantial:
whitewash or lime wash w/chalk paint or milk paint
