Lighting living room Design Dilemma

Ceiling fan with light suggestion for living room

We are in the final steps of a reno and have had trouble coming up with a good fan for the living room. Its a ranch house, pretty basic living room. 18' long by 13' wide. Its 8' ceilings so would like to do a flush mount. We do not have any other lights in the ceiling, just lamps. So we need something as a decent light source. The walls are SW silver strand.

I have attached a room picture (not a great picture) and two possible fan ideas to start with.

A fan with a light attached is not going to illuminate your living room very well. Just select a fan, and then use table and floor lamps for lighting, unless you want to install wall sconces or eyeball lights in the ceiling.

Thanks. We currently have a fan with led down bulb lights in a similar room (we use it for a kids playroom) and the light works well. Just looking for different styles or ideas than the standard plain ones we already have in other rooms of the house.

I have a ceiling fan with bottom lights ( spot led) with adjustable spots and are removable. We like them. It also has a top light which we use quite often. Fan and lights are 100% remote controlled. It's an Ellington brand. Ellington has several fans without lights, but are light compatible for future consideration. When building this house, I found two of these for $10 each on CL, new in box. The recessed ceiling lights are adjustable eyeball fitted with dimmable Cree LED BR20 bulbs.

I would forego the fan in the kitchen. There's no need for it. Because your sink is right in front of the island, I would go for a pendant only over one of them. It can look too busy to have them over both, especially when they overlap in the sight line. Over the island would be my vote. Recessed light everywhere would be your best bet but don't know your wants or budget. I would consult with a lighting professional, as lighting plans are actually more complicated than people think.

The room is lovely. if you have no where else, i would figure out how to convert one of the cabinets or place the tv on the small wall on the other side of the window from the fish tank. lets see lights and tables. I gave some wood to give some differential in the room. with no art space in the room you need texture color? let me know what you think.

That is a lot of chairs! Its a large room and to make it visually centered you really need to bring the furniture off the walls. With 4 chairs you may want to consider a sofa instead of a sectional. You can float the sofa facing the TV then have your swivels flank fireplace like Beverly is showing and you other two with their backs to the entrance. Back to lighting I would consider one or two large chandeliers coming down from the center beam with canned lighting .

Unless you NEED a fan, , this is clutter on the ceiling and ineffective and glaring light. Lamps can and do light a room and for more general ( ambient ) illumination, so do recessed lights or a pretty semi flush, or flush mount light fixture. A fan is not decoration, really...........it isn't.

Unfortunately we need a fan. Living in Florida it makes a big difference. We are limited with adding additional lighting in this ceiling due to a valley in the roof line and large duct work in the attic above this room. We have a standard style fan from Lowes in the bedrooms that is inexpensive and works well. Just seeing what others may recommend style wise besides the basic standard style.
