Replacing Living Room Ceiling Lights: More light ideas for evening

These are 3 photos of our living room. Since we took these photos we broke up the sectional and moved the TV above fireplace. I hate our end tables, I hate our lamps and now I hate the celiing fixture. The room gets plenty of light during the day but so dark at night. I want to add more light to the room and looking to see if we can replace ceiling fan and add a couple ceiling fixtures or floor lamps. Not sure what to do. Any thoughts?

The room is lovely. if you have no where else, i would figure out how to convert one of the cabinets or place the tv on the small wall on the other side of the window from the fish tank. lets see lights and tables.

I gave some wood to give some differential in the room. with no art space in the room you need texture color?

Hmm, if I should stick with simple then maybe I should just leave the fans? Or does their difference (silver & fake wood) stick out too much? Gracie, we really have no clue yet as to where we'll live in Denver. So many options and it's so hard to sort everything out! But Englewood is definitely on the list! 'Old' Englewood sounds especially nice from what I've been told, but I haven't seen the area yet. Littleton also sounds good. Have a sil in Brighton who wants us to live there, but I'm not sure that's the right place for us. Good schools, easy transportation to 16th St. Mall, and a family-friendly neighborhood feel are at the top of our want list. For the most part, we can't afford the housing in areas like Cherry Creek and Highlands Ranch. I'd love any help you can give :)

What's a good ceiling light for this living room?

The room is about 12x14. The lamp is supposed to be 3000 lumens but it feels slightly dark. If I turn on the two recessed light in the dining room (which is where I was standing when I took the photo), then the light is about right, but I still want to add something to the ceiling. Eventually I will replace the roman shades with white or wood color blinds. I wanted a contemporary, flush or semi-flush ambient light to complement the floor lamp. Pendant is okay if it's not too obtrusive. I've tried track lighting, but it's a little too dazzling for the small room. I've also tried drum lights, but the light was too omnidirectional. I've been searching for months but haven't found anything I like. I also set a $200 limit which only made it more difficult.

take the lamp with the yellow shade and set it on your end table. It will give you a feel for size. Im not sure you can go much larger on the end tables might start to get stuffy. Also, do you have floor out lets? IMO, not at pro. But I think that whole back wall could be better sorted. maybe a sofa table behind the could be a better place for lamps? OR maybe a long narrow console table on the back wall. move your art around and put lamps there?

I’m not a professional... I also have 8ft ceilings and had a big ceiling fan right in the middle of my living room. We got rid of the fan and added a small grid of recessed lights(mostly so we could see our tv over the fireplace)They look great and gives us nice lighting when we need more light at night. We only use them when we have guests over or are looking for something we’ve lost in that room. Usually the room is lit by lamp light. Anyway... you know 8ft ceilings are low. The only lights that would work well are recessed lights and flush mounts... maybe semi-flush mounts. Depending on the size of your living room, a flush mount or semi-flush mount may look too small and silly. A fan has long, flat blades giving it the illusion of a bigger light. If the flush mounts look too small, I’d just look for a farm house style fan that looks nice. If you really just hate the fan, put in another recessed light.

Thank you! I like the lamp option. We tried selling our house and took all the art off the walls. The house didn't sell so now we are working on making design changes. It's been a challenge finding furniture options that can stand up to 3 teenagers (plus friends), two dogs and two cats. :)

ok, do you want me to toss everything else and give info on lamps? unlike many, i goals of keeping things very reasonable.Lamps are up to $100. standing are up to $150.

I prefer recessed lighting. I'd install some of those on different switches with dimmers, according to your needs. You will be very happy with the variety available. Also, keep a center light and just choose something that makes you happy.
