Comments (14)we never used flour ... in my part of the South (just outside of Atlanta) HUSH PUPPIES Makes 6 servings Source: Mrs Dull's Sothern Cooking White Lily CornBread mix, available in the South, can be substituted for the cornmeal and leavenings. Why are they called Hush Puppies? (See below) 2 cups white cornmeal preferably stone ground 1 teaspoon flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda (delete if cornmeal is self-rising) 1 teaspoon baking powder (delete if cornmeal is self-rising) 1 teaspoon salt 1 egg lightly beaten 3 tbsps minced onions 1 to 1 1/2 cups buttermilk Crisco for frying Mix all dry ingredients. Stir in onion, one cup buttermilk and the beaten egg. Stir well, adding more milk if needed. Let sit 10 minutes. Drop by the spoonful into skillet of hot melted Crisco about 1" deep. Fry to a golden brown, turning once. Drain on paper towels. If serving with fried fish, cook in same skillet to enhance flavor. Outdoor fish frys used to be a form of entertainment in the south, mainly a guy thing. The fish would be pulled from the lake, dressed and cooked on the spot. Of course, there was always a pack of hungry dogs around. Someone made up an extra thick batch of the batter the fish were dipped in, fried spoonfuls of the batter and threw them to the dogs... you got it: Hush, puppy!!...See Morescreaming howling puppy
Comments (10)Hi Karen: You've got yourself one really great dog. Both breeds are absolutely wonderful. Just remember, he's only a 9 week old baby. Not too long ago he had litter mates and now he's being isolated. That's a really big, scary, thing. At 9 weeks old I do not suggest long walks. I don't suggest ANY walks until he's had all his shots. Also, if you research the two breeds they are not ones to be kept enclosed, especially the great pyrenees. He'll be a fantastic therapy dog although great pyrenees can be some what stubborn. If your keeping him in a kennel for short periods of time while working in the garden, make it fun. Make it like a game. Toys should help and keep yourself within his sight. It'll take him time. I wouldn't suggest keeping him in there for long periods, he'll go stir crazy. Great pyrenees are fantastic escape artists....See Moreanother bunch of dumb puppy questions
Comments (2)My one year old english bulldog has weekly puppy play dates with another Eng. Bully. They bark at each other all the time. Tootsie likes to run up onto chairs or tables and Lulu sits on the ground barking at her to come play. they're talking. They actually get quite vocal. And their playing looks rough to me with all the biting but you can see they are enjoying themselves. They run around the yard chasing each other. Lulu goes and gets tootsies toys and drop them in front of her to get her attention. They were even playing tug of war today with the rope. I think as a dog owner you can recognize when your dog is playing or when she is getting mad....See MoreHush Puppies
Comments (19)well, i finally produced an end product that i liked... it had flavor, texture and even though baked...a bit of crunch to it. Yes, it was very tasty. it was light years away from the traditional hush puppy approach. I don't think i am going to post the recipe because most everybody will laugh and then turn their nose up without trying to use the recipe. I may not even make it again either. I used a half cup of olive oil in the recipe. How many recipes do you find like that. in any case it was sort of fun screwing around with this odd ball approach but i more than likely will revert to the traditional recipes as posted earlier in this thread. thanks for the responses......See MoreLars
