Where should I start with this family room?

We bought a house recently, and this is the family room we're working with. I'm not really sure where to start as far as updating it. Obviously the red carpet is going away. I'm thinking we'll go with this carpet https://shawfloors.com/flooring/carpet/details/silver-twist-accent-ea580/aspen-twist and this paint color http://www.behr.com/consumer/ColorDetailView/N200-1. I just want to brighten everything up.

As for the bookshelves, I know we'll lose the three sets on the first photo because we're opening that wall up to the kitchen. I'm not sure what to do with the rest of them. Do I take them out? Paint them white?

I'm also not sure what to do with the fireplace. I really wish it wasn't as wide as it is. I'm not crazy about the idea of painting brick, but I don't know if it's possible or worth it to put up some kind of facade or maybe even tear it out completely & replace it with another material, or tear out some of it to make it narrower? I just think it looks very dated right now, & it takes up so much of the wall.

For the dark wood beams on the ceiling, they're just decorative, so I'm thinking we'll take out the ones on the lower part of the ceiling at least. I think the ceiling is somewhat low there so the dark beams make it feel more closed in. I don't mind the ones on the higher area of the ceiling though, so I wouldn't mind keeping those. There's a low beam that divides the 2 areas where an addition was added & unfortunately I don't think we can take that out or raise it because of structural issues.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I'm just not sure where to start, but I'd like to get the new carpet installed soon & would need to know if I'm keeping bookshelves or the fireplace to get that measured.

Thanks!
