Wood Putty to fill nail holes?

I've been using a tub of elmer's wood putty that has the wood fibers, but I find that no matter how much I try to sand it smooth, you can still always see it slightly after it is painted in some areas. Is there a better putty or filler that doesn't shrink and is better than the type I am using?

I've heard people say they use Spackle successfully, but others say it shrink after it is painted and you can see the indent.

What is best for filling nail holes in trim?
