Paint or Stain? Fill Holes or Leave as Is?
Comments (22)Though I thought I'd take the advice of the majority here and embrace the table's past, I did end up filling and painting. It all boiled down to what worked and what didn't, which some times you don't really know until you just dive in and find out. After some prep work for a light staining (leaving holes) I realized there were other practical considerations and needed a nicer surface in order to make it practical. It's chalk painted (well not boutique chalk paint, my own sorta like it version that looks very similar) white with reasonably heavy distressing and a matte clear sealer on the top only. It's working great so far, though the room is too far from finished for photos. I added "feet" to raise to to a more workable height and made sure to sand (and sand, and sand and sand again) between each coat and at the end, especially over the nail heads and edges and where to board lines are on top. Thanks for everyone's input!! You guys really are the best advice going. ;)...See MorePainting oak stair spindles.... Best filler? Primer?
Comments (2)Hey Bobsmyuncle I was hoping you'd come to the rescue. You gave me lots of info. to refinish a desk awhile back. I failed to complete it because I'm too chicken to use a harsh stripper. The top was the only part I got done. I'd love to take a hands on refinishing class but there's nothing like that around here. Anyhow, If I use a stripper to remove the existing finish do I need to take down the stairs? (I'm hoping you say no.) What about ventilation? Can I just open some windows and use fans? As for painting, I know my Dad took all of the stair pieces to his work and sprayed a clear coat. I don't know what it was but could find out. Just clean and 'scuff' not completely strip the protective clear coat? Thanks for the BIN suggestions. I'll use that if I ever get brave enough to try this. With the BIN after you sand, prime, is there a chance you would need to lightly sand and prime again or should one coat do it? I'm assuming there are directions on the stuff but was curious....See MoreWhite Oak Floors: Can I keep them natural or would staining be best?
Comments (44)@Robin Morris, Im a bit confused between the terminology of "sealer" and "finish coat", but I love the look on your floors! Are they glossy or completely matte. I like the look in broad day light better than at night! Just to make sure, you applied one coat of Bona Birch and then 3 coats of another stain which is Bone Mega? (Looking at your samples picture, bone mega looked darker and orangier...) I'm trying to get my white oak cabinets to have a neutral look as well!...See MoreQuestion about refinishing painted hardwood floors
Comments (13)When I hear someone recount something that makes no sense, I generally figure that someone misspoke or didn't hear correctly. Whenever I see huge variations (3x) in price quotes, I generally figure someone made a mistake. Maybe the third quote will clear things up. Whether wood can be refinished depends on the type of floor and condition. Since you're selling, and already having work done in the house, I'd be inclined to have all the floors redone unless the finisher can match it 90%. If there's any doubt, do it all. This assumes you know what prospective buyers are going to want. I usually recommend the opposite when people are living in the house. Colors and preferences here are all over the place. Usually it seems foolish to upend residents and spend their money when there's a good likelihood the next person won't like their choice, but your situation sounds different since you're already having work done. The only warnings I have about sanding painted floors are that you may find some cosmetic damage and you may end up with paint residual in some cracks....See MoreRelated Professionals
