Pecan Harvest

I just bought a house that has two mature pecan trees. I was told to gather the pecans once the outer shells turn brown and start to peel away from the inner shell. I also picked all of the green nuts that had fallen. When I opened the nuts inside the brown shells (about 20), they were all dried out already! I opened a few of the green nuts, and the nuts were not dried out, but slightly bitter. Any suggestions on how to harvest? My trees are very tall, and I can barely reach the bottom limbs with a shovel, so shaking them is not really an option...

You might try posting this on the Texas and California forms since both states grow significant Pecan crops.

The hull needs to split or separate in order for the nut to be mature. Harvest when the nut falls from the tree. The green nuts with hull intact are either immature or known as sticktights which in most cases are flawed and usually have one of many diseases that effect nut production/quality.

Looked at my conifer grafts.. found 1 dead scion. The same cultivar also was dead on a dead rootstock. Does that give me 1/2 a point to the good? lol ...the other rootstock "looked" alive but I'll bet it's going to die. Null is the word, lol. Of course had to be Abies koreana Wellenseind. Glad I have another already grafted, lol. pfff Ken, give a guy some acceptance to go nutty once in a while, lol... Dax

Thanks for the concern, Carrie, two of them will probably be OK with a little time to grow back, One took a big hit to the main leader... I'm going to try to raise up some of the branches that survived to get it going up again, but, I wouldn't be surprised in a year or two if I had to take it down (or it simply quits).

Yes, found out last month that poor quality gloves are worse than none at all. Pin holes in the finger tips allowed the oils to diffuse around the sides of the fingers instead of staying just on the handling surfaces. The parts of the fingers that saw some friction in daily use did clear up in a matter of days, but the sides remained stained much longer. Never tried one friend's suggestion to take sandpaper to them :-/
