Comments (29)Kathi- Your Gloriosa Lily is showing a lot of reds. Do you have it in a lower light situation? Mine gets full sun this year in the afternoon rather than the morning so that is why I think it is more close to the purple and yellow side. Rock Oak Deer: Thanks for looking at my pics. Asiatics are great here in VA. The temps typically stay cool enough for some great long lasting blooms here. I was very surprised at how well Asiatics and Orientals grow in a shade garden. I have no direct light but it is still bright. I know they say on the box Full Sun but maybe in TX try indirect light only(you may already do that but I figured that I would suggest it). I think you would get the longest lasting blooms in that type of lighting condition. Why I like Crinums... :-) They have a fragrance... some smell good but some smell great They are super durable. I have yet to kill one and I think if you do kill one you are supposed to be embarassed and never mention it. lol Most are rebloomers. Most bloom a couple times a season and some bloom several times(after heavy rains). They are heirloom plants and more often than not they will live longer than the person who planted them. I also find it interesting that these plants hybridize in the wild creating new interesting varieties, and new "old" varieties are being rediscovered. I also like to push zone hardiness to the brink with the use of microclimates and other techniques, so these being Z8-11... I am right at home with these here in Z7. I am currently testing hardiness of different plants including crinums, palms, brugs, and others in Fredericksburg, VA. -------------------------------------------------------- This is what I was planning on posting today... I have new leaf growth on 2 of my 3 F4 Whites and 1 of the Jean Pasko. The 2 P&C seem to be the ones that I am most worried about since I noticed a lot of people mention that this one is difficult and I have not noticed any progress yet. Some of the others do not seem to be forming leaves but are forming what looks like branching a super tiny leave(which the leaflets were there when I received the cuttings) I am curious... Do any of the varieties that I received require to be Air Layered when rooting cuttings or the usual way should be fine. Also to those of you that root your Brugs in water only... How often do you change the water? Thanks again, David...See MoreQuestion for Allison0704 about a Christmas Deer
Comments (25)Oh, didn't realize you wanted to keep the brown showing a bit! Follow My3Dogs advice then. Chijim, I called (or did live chat?) with Wisteria before purchasing since I didn't want the inexpensive looking hard/shiny poly resin. They told me it was (something) and when I looked up the name, it said it was a resin like material that had sawdust, or something, mixed with it. The material can be made to look more "hand carved" than resin. I searched and found the old thread, but I didn't post this info there and cannot find the material name searching the internet. We need to have a deer/stag thread this Christmas to get them all in one place!...See MoreMy 19th Christmas Craft Night
Comments (15)Thanks everyone! I bought aprons from Michael's but they seemed thin and on the smaller side. I went to a restaurant supply store and bought 12 with 6 in black and 6 in white. They were a bit longer, wider, three pockets at the bottom and adjustable neck. They were $9.45. One lady bought an apron from Amazon and from Kroger. I saw the apron on Pinterest but there were no directions. My gf has a Cricut Maker and she was able to copy everything from Pinterest. She cut out 17 complete sets and that was 2 vinyl rolls each of glitter green, glitter gold, and red. I bought an off-brand that Michaels had on sale for $9,99 a roll. At my work we have the Cricut Easy Press and that is what we used to adhere the vinyl. An iron will work also. We did the whisk first, then the leaves and berries and We. Then I did each side for the words on the bottom. The red vinyl is thinner than the glitter vinyl and we only had one problem with anything going wrong and that was on my apron. Somehow the red WE had gotten messed up, but we heated it from the back, peeled it off and applied another one. At my craft night the ladies know what the main craft is, but don't know what the ornament is. I bought hoops on Amazon, material from Hobby Lobby and a coworker made many different designs on her Cricut. I just grabbed all my greenery from previous years and let everyone decorate. Throughout the 19 years people have come and gone. If someone doesn't come for several years, they end up getting taken off my list and sometimes I add a new friend. My youngest daughter (who just turned 21) finally got to come this year. For the most part its the same people who come year after year. It's really a special time and I know I am very lucky to have friends that continuously want to join me on this night....See MoreMy trees from seed project for 2020.
Comments (135)1-9-21 update: The little Picea mariana lost about an inch off the top leader. The inch or so below that had dormant buds that broke nicely but seemed to be much slower growing than the rest of them. So after a while, I cut another inch off the top and tied up one of the side branches, which were all growing vigorously. The new leader has side branches and has grown another inch+ since the picture was taken 10 days ago and the tree is about a foot taller than it was this spring. Without getting too lengthy, the other trees in this thread are doing well. I replaced the two small hemlock seedlings, planted in the ground, that refused to grow, with those replacements I kept in pots. 'Larry' is now over 4ft. tall (so much for his life as a dwarf) but nice looking tree. I gave the Thuja o. to my Grand SIL for their yard at their new place. The Bicolor oaks are healthy and growing vigorously....See Moreteeda
