Things are changing...(OT)

Well, for at least 3 years, we have been nagged relentlessly by our local govt to clear a safe 100 feet around our house (if I did that literally I would have to knock down 3 of my neighbor's houses), etc. Certainly for more rural areas it makes a lot of sense. Anyway, it has become a chorus and a mantra anytime we get a communication from our town or county.

Well, I may have evidence that things might change - in the latest newsletter there was an article entitled "Be prepared for Disaster.." When I looked at it, it was NOT about earthquakes or fires. The gist of it was to make sure your drainage worked, and be prepared for massive rains and flooding! The city has men out already clearing the storm drains and trimming trees. Such a nice change! When you live in Calif, there is always something to worry about, but personally I am tired of worrying about drought and fires, and worrying about flooding sounds much nicer!

We are now the proud owners of about 150 sand bags which, when filled, will hopefully keep our steep hillsides more or less in place. It's a little difficult to get into that frame of mind when it's been over 90 degrees for what seems like forever, with the latest storm system completely passing us by and nothing on the radar. Everyone seems sure that it will happen, although I won't believe it completely just yet, but am very much hoping that the predictions are accurate.

We had a bit of rain here yesterday, which was UNPREDICTED by the weather folks, so getting into the mood is easier. I have made a promise to myself not to complain about any rain we may get, including flooding. We have flood insurance, although I do not expect to need it. It is so nice to have cool, cloudy weather again!

Siam I know, cause Hubby will not be after I get back and they are dead rofl. Just kidding. I do my best every day and with the heat increasing...it is even hard for me to keep em all happy. Maddy and I sure will have a great time. I wish I lived closer to the other 2 grandkids. But not complaining. Pam my neighbors are all sickly and up there in age. I mean really up there. You know, like a little boy says to mommy at the store...look mom, this lady is REALLY old. Well...I guess through out life....when you look at someone who is a LOT OLDER....you just can not help yourself lol I like this Lantana too. Have a few other colors. But for Amadeus' resting place I found a white one at Lowes and not a plain purple one that I have already. But purple with pinkish white blooms also. Lucy

What a clever tooth fairy! I have a "friend" I take teaching with me-the "Safe-Place Fairy." She has accompanied me for years, and does her job very well-the story goes: "IF you don't put this (homework paper, note to parents, invitation, book list, spelling words...) in a safe place, then the safe place fairy will come and do it for you. The only problem is, the safe place fairy's safe places are not in your desk or notebook or book bag. They are far far away. SOOOOO...." Last month I taught a class of 6th graders. I have been teaching these kids since they were in 4th, and they have heard all my stories, including the dragon that lives in my trunk-another ongoing companion. A student that has, shall we say, organizational issues, made the remark when I asked about yet another missing homework paper-"That safe-place fairy musta fed it to your dragon." Just cracked me up. But he still had to redo the paper.

I don't think I've ever seen poppies of that fabulous color. I love, love purple roses and all purple flowers. The poppies go beautifully with your roses. Diane, can you tell me the names of the roses with your poppies? The purple one on the right especially intrigues me. Lisa, my young roses never look that good! Yours are gorgeous. Lois, I had Harlow Carr at one time and it fried in my dry heat. Yours makes me want mine back again, but of course you have a lot more humidity. Lisa, my previous cat, now sadly gone, was also my outdoor companion and I enjoyed that so much. I could trust him to stay with me and not wander off. I miss that with Lacey, but she's not at all used to the outside, and if she saw a lizard or bird she'd be gone in a minute. Every animal is different and one can never replace another. They all have their own unique little personalities. Your pictures are all so fabulous.

It's raining here in Siskiyou County and all the plants look happy! We live on a creek and same thing, I will not complain! The only flood we've had in 10 years is from an improperly installed pipe!

No rain here. And if El Nino REALLY happens, and we get rain, it will likely not start until at least January. Maybe February, or even March.

And yes, if it's as big as they say, it could be very bad for some people.

We also have a huge number of sandbags, and we'll be getting in sand, to fill them. We know the "lay" of the hillside pretty well. We know the paths water will take, as it flows from farther up the hill. Our aim is to use the sandbags to direct the water PAST our land, onto the Edison Co. right-of-way, which will carry it on down hill. From there, it is the business of those "down-stream" to be aware of where it will flow, and direct it in safe directions.

Our rain gutters are clear -- but we will have to clear them again before long.

The "joker in the deck" is whether there will be fire on the hillside above us. The last time this happened, there was, and we had some impressive mudslides. We hope that won't happen.

Neighbors who weren't here the last time . . . One has asked for advice about where the water will go. One is a "know it all" who will just have to figure it out as he goes along. :-)

I have my knee boots, but I really need a new poncho . . . :-)
