What to seal gap in hardwood before putting down shoe moulding?
Comments (2)You can buy polyurethane backer rod at a hardware store. Backer rod is forced in large gaps and then the caulk is applied. I think the diameters start with 1/4". I agree that caulk should be all you'll need for most of the gaps....See Morehow to fill a gap between vanity and side wall, baseboard issue too
Comments (9)Unfortunately, I don’t see an easy way to hide those gaps. If there was a front overhang for the countertop, you could easily apply a small piece of trim molding on both sides. However, with no overhang, the problem is how to esthetically terminate the top end of the trim. You’ll have to decide if having an exposed top end to the trim with some kind of bevel is acceptable. I wouldn’t try to build up the surface, or to caulk into those cracks. It wouldn’t look very good, and would just draw attention to the issue. It would be better to just learn to live with them, than to do such a bastardized fix....See MoreShoe molding and baseboard question?
Comments (8)I've never noticed that the toe kick gets beat up so I wouldn't worry about that. As was suggested above and was done in my kitchen for both remodels, a custom size toe kick panel must be made and then scribed to the floor or cabinet so that it sits on the floor. It's not difficult or complicated and it looks fine in the end. The peninsula in our first kitchen was at least an inch rise from one end to the other. They obviously didn't average it. The second kitchen was off by two inches. When I insisted they be reinstalled to split the difference in height between the two ends the contractor refused and I fired him. Had to hire another carpenter to fix it at my expense but it was worth it....See MoreGaps in Baseboards help!!!!
Comments (7)This is one reason that people apply shoe mold or quarter round at the floor. It is a bit more flexible and can be adapted to irregularities. I am putting minimal base and some recessed base in now and that needs to be scribed which is above and beyond the norm and very tedious. Some people caulk but I generally don't think that looks great, it can emphasize rather than conceal...See Moreonecolumbus
