Bacon Baking, Straight Talk
Comments (37)Well, I have developed high blood pressure about a year ago, but I've had cholesterol well over 400 since my 20s, when I first had it tested, probably it was before. the second time I had it tested it was 510. So, I lost weight, walked every day, became a vegetarian. I ate oatmeal and beans and apple pectin, tried red rice yeast extract and niacin. Yup, it went down to 498. Ahem. The doc says it's strictly a genetic fluke, and that nothing I ate or didn't eat was going to lower it to a reasonable level. So, my use of bacon grease neither increases or decreases my cholesterol level. The physical work involved in throwing hay, running the rototiller, digging post holes (yeah, by hand), shoveling calf pens and general farm chores along with the two miles I walk daily keep me in pretty good shape, but don't have any impact at all on either my blood pressure or my cholesterol, but my recent stress test was "really good for a woman my age". LOL Since I don't smoke or drink, I can't give up either of those. Nope, I'm keeping the bacon grease, thanks. I'll give up trans fats and corn syrup instead. Annie...See MoreIf You Bake your Bacon?
Comments (10)I do mine in the microwave. I put a piece of paper towel on the bottom of a microwave dish and a piece over the top of the bacon. It depends on the power of your microwave how long to cook it. I have learned to listen to it just like you listen to popcorn cooking in the microwave. When the grease popping slows done, it is probably done, depending on how crisp you like it. With my one daughter's microwave I used to cook it about a minute per piece of bacon, but the one here is higher wattage and takes less time. When you first start doing it this way you have to check to see if it is done and if it isn't, micro it some more. You will soon learn how long it needs in the microwave you are using....See MoreHow do you make your baked apples?
Comments (5)Baked Apples This recipe I got fifty years ago from my husband's cousin and I use it all the time. Core apples, I use Golden Delicious. Cut in half and place the cut side up. Fill up a 9 x 13 inch pan. Mix together brown sugar and one small box of instant pudding, vanilla or butterscotch. Sprinkle over all the apples. Dot with butter and cinnamon. Sprinkle just a few drops of water over the top. Bake until done, basting from time to time with the syrup that forms. I never put anything else in them. If you have just a few apples, use half a package of the pudding. I made these this past weekend. Sue...See MoreHow Do You Make Your Baked Beans?
Comments (21)If we are talking canned beans, bushes vegetarian beans taste better than their orinal pork & beans To make my own I begin by baking a 12 or 15lb ham,, When the ham is baked I remove the skin and save it for my beans. After we have finished the ham I put the ham bone in the crock pot, then I take all the skin that I saved and cut it into 1" squares and put those in the crock pot. I then put two 1lb bags of dried navy or pinto beans in the pot (prefer one bag of each) and chop two or three large onions and toss them in. Add a 1/2tsp of chili powder, 1tsp of course black pepper and a cup of molassass. Turn the crock pot on high and cook for three to four hours (till the beans are done.) Sometimes I add a couple small cans of tomato paste too. Note: when the beans cook down all those pieces of the ham skin will soften and have the same flavor and texture as the chunks of meat in cambels pork & beans....See More- 10 years ago
