Comments (2)Although im not a fan of maple. Not for any reason other than i get tired of dealing with it over the last 10 years. I think you could maple or hickory. Do you have a budget set? Have you decided on prefinish or sitefinish? Comments (10)If insulated properly, and that includes opening up the floors as well as walls and ceilings, then no, there is no real difference in the temperature of the floors. But, doing this properly is a big, complicated, job. There are certain building codes that cover habitable space vs. storage space, and while insulation is covered under those, there are also a whole other host of issues that need to be addressed in order to do this safely and legally. Any job not done correctly, and permitted and inspected, will be a detriment to the value of the home rather than adding any value. Not to mention the fact that if it's not done in a safe code compliant manner, would you really want to have you or your children occupy it? In the event of a fire in the garage below, proper separation of the garage and living spaces as well as proper egress windows could mean the difference between life and death for your loved ones....See MoreHelp me choose - Hardwood in Kitchen
Comments (24)Hardwoods are beautiful, but I hate having them in a kitchen. They take a lot of abuse with stuff getting dropped on them and you always have to worry about water damage. We had a leak at our ice maker hookup that was quickly stopped, but it caused all of the boards around the refrigerator to cup. It took 6 months for the floor to truly dry out and the cupping to ease (eased but not totally gone). Still, it wasn't until we had the floors refinished that all signs of the water damage were erased. Hardwoods really should not be put in areas of the home that have a water source....See MoreHardwood floor stain - please help me choose (PICTURES)
Comments (27)Here's the final result with #3 (50% classic gray and 50% weathered oak). The pictures vary depending on the angle/lighting and may not do it justice, it looks great to us, nice neutral grey/brown color that isn't too dark (or too light). Some "pink" hues may just barely show from the red oak but it's only after I analyzed the pictures on my computer that this occurred to me, in real life it's not something we personally see. Thanks for everyone's input....See MoreAlicia Petrucci
