Help me choose a hardwood floor color!
Comments (2)Although im not a fan of maple. Not for any reason other than i get tired of dealing with it over the last 10 years. I think you could maple or hickory. Do you have a budget set? Have you decided on prefinish or sitefinish? Call up a few hardwood floor pros and ask for samples then you can get a better idea of what you are getting yourself into...See MoreHelp me choose - Hardwood in Kitchen
Comments (24)Hardwoods are beautiful, but I hate having them in a kitchen. They take a lot of abuse with stuff getting dropped on them and you always have to worry about water damage. We had a leak at our ice maker hookup that was quickly stopped, but it caused all of the boards around the refrigerator to cup. It took 6 months for the floor to truly dry out and the cupping to ease (eased but not totally gone). Still, it wasn't until we had the floors refinished that all signs of the water damage were erased. Hardwoods really should not be put in areas of the home that have a water source....See MoreHelp me choose hardwood flooring to match cabinets
Comments (13)Soony, As you look in the picture, you will see glass block running all along the back counter area. That is to the outside, allowing bright sun to shine through during the day. If you have a wall that you could actually do that with, and you will have to contact the builder and show him that picture, then I would say that wouldn't be too dark at all. But, if you aren't willing to put the extra money out to have all that glass block installed, (and if you look closely, the glass runs all the length of the room actually, and then glass door at the end of the room also, probably allows additional light in), then I would think twice about the black on black for your kitchen in that picture....See MoreCarpet or hardwood in this space? Comments (11)Well, I'm a HW fan but we have more handmade rugs than we do rooms, LOL. HW is a better seller, but you need a top-quality finish on it, such as Bona or Swedish. Refinishing HW can be almost as expensive as new W2W (and you have to move furniture out for either). Carpet HIDES dust/hair better, but a lot of dirt filters down through it. You are right that it's a lot 'cozier', though. We have a downstairs Master suite and it is the coldest room in the house. We did put in W2W for that 'comfort factor.' However, that was 25 yrs ago. The carpet's disgusting now--permanently stained, flattened nap. My allergies have gotten worse over the years, and I suspect the carpet isn't helping the issue no matter how often it's vacuumed. We have the original red oak flooring upstairs from 1940 in the LR/DR/frt bdrm,. It was refinished with oil-based polyurethane in 1990 (good water-based poly wasn't on the market yet). It is still in beautiful condition and ridiculously easy to maintain. That said, I think it's clear your heart belongs to W2W. Even if you eventually sell your home, it isn't a given that HW floors are a guaranteed "sell". HW is nice, people love and appreciate it, but if other factors are positive for your home - layout, location, cleanliness, good maintenance - your home will sell even with W2W. So unless you absolutely know you are going to sell your home by a specific time, go with what you love....See MoreMDLN
