Need help deciding on backsplash
Below are a few ideas we've been considering for our backsplash, but we're having trouble deciding which looks best and visualizing what it would look like on a large scale! And, so we're asking for help. :)
A few personal preferences: 1) we'd prefer a low backsplash which limits the height to 7.75"; 2) our countertop- Typhoon Bordeaux granite - has a lot of color and movement, so we'd prefer to keep the backsplash somewhat low-key.
Our cabinets are a medium brown and we have light hardwood floors. The window trim is white.
My husband loves the look of natural stone, in particular light travertine, and we're trying to figure out a way to use it. I found a linear mosaic that has almost all the same colors in our granite and stainless steel strips that tie in the appliances and am considering using it for an accent, but I'm not sure how to make it work.
Here's just the mosaic strip. We like the look, but are concerned we might get tired of how busy it feels.
Here we're considering 6x12 light travertine tiles with the linear mosaic strips (we only had 6x6 and 4x6 samples to use). However, we can only fit 2 mosaic strips, which doesn't seem like enough. And it also feels like we need to top it off with something, but what?
I wasn't sure about using shorter tile, but here is a 4x6 tile with a few more mosaic strips and pencil trim on top.
Here is just the light travertine (we'd use 6x12 tiles). We had considered using this all the way to the upper cabinets. (Still not opposed to that idea.) Again, it feels like something is missing and can't figure out what to do.
Do any of these look like reasonable ideas for using all throughout a kitchen? Or, are there any other suggestions we could consider?

8 years agoI have typhoon bordeaux and honestly I think that even a travertine would fight with your countertop. Like anitamo said, let the countertop be the star. I would pick a nice crackle tile. I used a Jeffrey Court crackle tile for my kitchen. Here's a picture.

Comments (8)This is going to be a challenge. I agree that the current backsplash clashes with the new granite. I would not do white tiles. Here is what you need to keep in mind. You need a transition color that will play well with the oak and the counter. Side story: I had to do my BS twice. We put in BM Dove White cabinets but picked (I was out voted!) a brown/taupe Giallo granite counter. We put a white BS in and it looked horrible. It was fighting with the counter. I wound up with a Grazia Rixie crackle tile in a cream color. The cream of the tile matches with the cream in the granite and transitions nicely from the white of the cabinets. It is difficult to see, but I am hoping you have a cream tone in the counter. Your counter reads taupe to me so a very light taupe might work. Ignore the white appliance. At some point, I would like to see stainless because the white is too stark with your browns. I agree with lefty about lighting, but I doubt it will help as your current BS appears gold/yellow....See MoreI need help deciding on a backsplash

8 years agoI can see what you are trying to do. I agree on a simple rile over travertine. I really wanted some accents and did something similar to your one picture. I had the same issue with the window and our tile guy was amazing! Ignore the faucet running.
This is Rixi crackle tile with an accent. It might help you decide yeah or not.

8 years agolast modified: 8 years agoI use the term Stonehenge to refer to kitchens with a busy stone counter and bs of yet another stone. It's not my favorite look. That said, I'm also steadfastly anti-travertine, so take my words with a grain of salt. If it were my kitchen I would go with glazed ceramic tile, no question. The image below is of Fireclay tile in Clear Glaze. I see a hex shape with your counters for some reason, but subway would be fine too. How would you feel about a stacked or herringbone layout?
