Help me decide what liner/moulding to use for my backsplash

So, here are the details.

I have Costa Esmeralda countertops and cream cabinets. I am definitely putting in sonoma stellar krazy(it's a nice cream) crackle in 2x6. Behind my 30 inch range I am doing a 20x22 size feature of 1x2 herringbone in the same color crackle.

I need help deciding what to frame it with.

My first choice was just a liner like nvdweb used. This is the exact same tile that I am using. But my herringbone pattern will be smaller(1x2). I like how she used the full size tiles, but I only have a 30 inch range. Not really enough room to show the pattern.

mamadadapaige used a simple stick liner too. I like how nvdweb's is a little raised though.

Or frame it out with something like Jbrodie used. Dh likes this one and so does the gal at the tile shop. I'm not sure if it would be too much for my small space. I want to see a little interest behind the range, but I don't want it to be all you see.

Which do you like to go with the small herringbone pattern? I ordered the bigger moulding yesterday, but had second thoughts and told her to put the order on hold. My gut is saying to go with the first choice like nvdweb.

I need some other opinions.....please and thank you!

I have a 30" range with a back so I had even a smaller space under my hood than you do. Here is my picture frame molding so you can get an idea of what it looks like in a smaller space. The picture frame molding was also "framed" by the subway tiles.

That looks so pretty Marcy. Thank you for posting it. I don't know if I've ever seen your kitchen before.It helps to see the molding on a smaller range.Is tht Onyx on the inside? Really nice!

Anyone else have an opinion what I should do?

Thank you! I'm leaning towards the garnet myself.. because I am too a red kinda gal, but was afraid it would be too loud if you know what I mean. I was thinking it would be more serene with the blue/green, however the granite has specks of garnet in it, which I think would look really nice. I am no design expert so I am sure others will chime in that have more experience than me. Since you said your floor tile is already busy, and you want to go with a busy skinny brick backsplash, on the wall that has the range and hood, I would only put that skinny brick behind the stove and hood and go straight up to the ceiling. I personally would not do the entire wall with that tile. Y'know that saying "too much of a good thing"? That's what I think of when you say you want to tile the entire wall. The tile looses it's uniqueness (is that such a word?) when it's everywhere. Plus, if your floor is busy, and your countertops will be busy with granite, and your wall is super busy, your eye will be drawn to all these different surfaces and textures. It's not a soothing look. All three textures will be competing with each other. The wall with the sink....does it have a window in it? Are the cabinets on that wall? Again, I would not tile the entire wall, only up to underneath the cabinets (assuming there are some there). I personally would have one texture be the focal point, whether it be the countertops, backsplash or floor. I really love the tile around the fireplace so I personally would choose that as the dominant texture and have the other surfaces more soothing, if that makes sense. When you mention painted crown moulding, I am assuming you mean on the walls and not on the cabinets. I think you would be fine with white above the cabinets since the cabinets do not go up to the ceiling. I have also seen crown moulding on top of tile, should you decide to tile the entire wall. Thanks for all the nice words--now I just have to wait a couple more days for the tiles guys to come back and reinstall my shelf brackets over the tile, and install a utensil rail over the range--and THEN I can call this project done! (and focus on finishing the long unfinished BATHROOM project.... :) ) cotehele--my faucet is from Harrington Brass (I bought it at qualitybath.com) --it was one of the few options for a wall mounted faucet with side spray, so I went with it even though I couldn't find many reviews of the brand. I initially had some problems with the lever/button thing on the hand spray kind of sticking--hard to press--but the company quickly sent me a new hand spray and I've had no problem since. I really like having the wall mount faucet (so easy to wipe off the countertop now)--and I definitely like having the side spray, too--so a good combination for me.

Was there a subtle color in the image you could use for the border? I don't think I'd like it with a significant color like purple or green, but if there was a shaded light tone you could get in the mini subways, I'd do the deeper border. Actually, personally, I'd do a smaller image and a deeper border (of some other sort, like double frame effect in your picture but using a plain time in between instead of the leaves if you don't like them) in any case. I don't like the wine bottles, myself--they look too much like a photo transfer rather than a hand painted effect.

For what it's worth, I think the picture frame will look good with your cabinets. Because you don't have the ornate wooden hood, I think the wider moulding will help accent the pattern better.

I think either the pencil molding or picture frame molding would look good. Personally, I like a raised molding versus a flat one, especially if all your tiles are the same. I like the idea of the smaller herringbone inside the frame.

I like using the chair rail-- I always think it attracts more attention-- like it's framing a "masterpiece, if you will. :-) But it might just be a little overstated for the space you have. What you might think about is something in between the chair rail, and the liners others have used-- something like a rope trim, preferably one is a very light color to give it just that little bit of accent.

Thanks Bill for chiming in.I agree with you about the frame. Something in my gut was telling me it's just not right. I will go back to the tile store today and check out the options in between the two. Then I'll need your advice about grout!
