Dog vaccinations... any alternatives?
Comments (13)I wanted to mention that my dog Rabies is a 3yr vaccine, not a yearly expense. This is legal in our state, so only a puppy would need a vaccination again at one year old. Some reason that is age related, is why the puppy Rabies is not lasting as good and needs a booster again at one year. Then dog gets next Rabies at age 4yrs. Horses need yearly Rabies vaccine, per the vaccine maker. Maybe bodies don't stay immune the same way. Can't remember on the cats. If my dog is on heartworm, I see no need for getting tested yearly. I asked the Vet if meds were not effective? If they are effective, then there should be no need for annual testing. We are stretching the time they get meds now to almost 9 months, though Vet would like you giving them year round. Kind of silly, when we have no bugs in most Dec, Jan, Feb, March months. So for me, I skip the meds those 4 months, and don't heartworm test yearly. Two blood tests is $100 from my Vet, money I should not need to spend if meds are effective. He makes me sign a form saying I didn't want the blood test, only the meds, understand the risk danger of giving meds anyway. I would shop around for another Vet. Maybe you are paying for convenience of location, walk-in services, nice building set-up. I need appointments for my pets, have to travel a bit to the clinic. Emergency hours or weekend service is poor, only one Dr. Not located in downtown. Mine pushes for tests but you can say no. Especially if dog is not exposed to places he could get those diseases. Again, I vaccinate, worm if needed after fecal check, because modern meds do the best job for my dog. I have seen dogs who were home dosed, with odd things to fix worms, prevent "summer sicknesses" and it was ineffective. The illness came fast and killed them, worms ruined their digestive systems causing later problems. These same problems were common in horses, and they died equally easily when I was a kid. Everyone cried about it, but there was no good preventions back then, animals died young. Modern worm medicines, vaccines, are easily the cheapest, most effective forms of preventing problems in your livestock and pets. I have to go with science and chemistry, until I get much better evidence that home or natural remedies work equally well....See MoreAddicted to OTC Sleep Aids - Any Alternatives?
Comments (23)I am a diagnosed insomniac - have been to a sleep disorder clinic. I can't take over the counter sleep aids because they all seem to contain the same ingredient that is used in anti-histamines and decongestants - and I am allergic to said cold meds. I can't take codeine either. The "happy" shot before surgery doesn't take and a local that should keep an area numb for a couple of hours will burn off in 5 minutes - so procedures don't scare me, it is the knowing that I will feel the pain that does it. So I count to 3 and wait for it. I woke up still in the operating room after the surgeons yanked out a kidney stone and remembered the names of all of the nurses and doctors. I tried the Cdn. equivalent of Ambien - 5 days later I was still up. When I wake up - usually after 3 or 4 hours sleep I am instantly alert - should have been a brain surgeon. My husband has witnessed it - he wakes up and then goes back to sleep - but not me. And I have tried everything. The tapes knocked my husband and aunt out - all they did was irritate the heck out of me. I am in quite in good health for a 63 year old but as my doctor said I have these issues that make life miserable. I don't take pain killers either. Re Vioxx - I get migraines and zip worked - except Vioxx had the side effect of working on migraines. I only took one when desperate - so if I had 30 pills I would have 26 three years later. I was about to pop one when the recall notice came on the news so I didn't. I don't have a condition that would be aggravated by Vioxx, but no point in risking it. Good thing that I have perfect blood pressure even when I appear to be bouncing off the walls - the gold standard. It makes life hard though because it was hard enough when I was younger when people were constantly telling me how tired I looked - and at 63 well I do look older and tired. It is really hard to make plans not knowing how I will feel. I eat nothing from a can/box or anything that has been preserved to the best of my ability. I only eat anti-biotic free meat - which in Canada means our food bills are high....See MoreIs There a Difference in Shampoo for Body and Volumnizing Shampoo
Comments (22)If you want more volume, but don't want to go the 'volumizing shampoo route', try reading the ingredients in the shampoo you usually use. If you see sodium laurel sulphate--immediately toss the bottle in the trash, even if it's almost full. SLS is terrible for both hair and scalp. It's clinically used to produce rashes to test medications for them. It strips your hair, makes it thin and unhealthy. And unfortnately, it's in many, many shampoos. Why? It makes them foam. Totally there for 'show'. Since most of us are adults and making elaborate hair sculptures isn't a necessary part of shampooing for us--we don't need SLS. I use an organic shampoo--it doesn't suds like the regular supermarket shampoos do, BUT it cleans my hair beautifully, and unbelievably, my hair is way, way thicker and healthier now--at age 60--than it was when I was 50 (and still using supermarket shampoo). Just switching to a SLS free shampoo will make a noticeable difference in the thickness/health of your hair. Of course, you have to wait patiently for the new, healthy hair to grow out. And you need to educate yourself about SLS--it's one of those components that goes by many names. Seriously, though, I don't think my hair has been this healthy for about 40 years. WELL worth the extra $$$ for a better shampoo....See MoreAcne/pimples from shampoo or conditioner?
Comments (44)If it is only showing up on his forehead and cheeks, it could be the shampoo. Try to find a shampoo without Sodium Laurel Sulfate. Difficult to find but they are out there. Does he wash his face with any other products? Something mild like Aveeno might be worth a try. I'd have a dermatologist check for rosacea, which is also accompanied by small broken blood vessels. Any product he is using could make rosacea worse. Even toothpaste has it and I realized recently that some of the other added ingredients in toothpaste was affecting my gums and the inside of my cheeks like a sloughing off of skin. I switched to a more 'regular' toothpaste without all the whiteners, etc and it stopped. Weird and creepy but that's what it was I think....See Morebeth09
