Plenty of critters afoot! When taking the dog out early one morning, I came across this guy:
It's a completely harmless checkered garter snake and the first one of its kind I've spotted in my yard. I've come across plenty of the common garter snake in the past, though. This spring I spotted a Mexican milk snake (or so I hope, didn't get a chance to take a photo nor remember the color bandings).
Ragna, here's a photo of my largest Moringa tree. How is yours doing? I've tasted a few leaves from it and it's not bad.
Here is a photo taken this morning of one of my beds with more than a few volunteers:
And signs of fall in the garden:
... the lycoris lily (aka hurricane lily). There are two more stalks that haven't opened yet.
Finally, a shot of one of my container plantings of zinnias. They have grown huge and flowered non-stop. I'm really impressed by these.

Comments (9)Hi Gang- Karen- I killed a few orchids before I succeded- you just have to give them morning light, set them on trays filled with stones,just enough water below stones, for humidity, fertilize with orchid food, & let them go dry before watering again- I have learned to restrain myslf! LOL! I get them on the clearance rack- the flower is a surprise to me when they finally bloom! Siam- I'm not sure which canna that red is- got it from a lovely neighbor- she'd leave me a surprise plant near her front fence when I'd walk by in the early hours- & I'd drop off one for her too! Fun! Rosepedal- I will try to get a close of of my EE- it's Alocasia Ilustris- I think some call it Black Magic- the photo doesn't do it justice! I just planted it in my garden, nice! The oxblood lilies are up. I got these last year and I look forward to them multiplying. They don't last long enough, in my opinion.
This is Exotic Love Vine (mina lobata). This is for the hummingbirds. I love how the flowers fade from dark red to white as they open.
Ragna, here is this year's batch of scarlet pentapete. Thanks again for those seeds! I've been growing it yearly and always have a few volunteers. It's finally starting to bloom heavily and has a ton of buds on it.
My salvias have been doing well. This is "Phyllis Fancy". It's temperamental as if we get any warming spell in the winter (which is every winter!), it'll quickly re-sprout and get killed by 2nd or 3rd frost. I usually take cuttings of this as a backup. It is a favorite of bees and hummers.
