Requesting opinions on appliance selections. (Long)
Comments (10)58" vent hood? Seems overkill to me. You might also be interested in a thread someone started regarding their heavy regrets regarding their 7 month old VAH (although there are many, many fans of VAH on GW.) Personally, I bought and have yet to use a Prestige VAH for my 48" 8 burner gas rangetop. About that rangetop - I personally decided against a grill or griddle (against strong opposition from my DH) and opted for 8 burners. Why? B/C I currently have a 5 burner range and find that I can't use all burners at once b/c the bottoms of the pans won't fit. I also find that I often want to slide pots and pans around, placing one nearer to me than another for a bit, and having all burners seemed to make that movement more fluid and safe. Last, I only use a griddle pan once or twice a week and love being able to pick up my lovely All-clad non-stick griddle pan and wash it in the sink and put it away. I found while we looked for our new house (which we gutted and are renovating and hoping to move into in April) the houses bith kitchens that smelled greasy and not quite clean, wer the houses with grills and griddles. I'm sure the owners tried diligently, but just couldn't completely get all the grease cleaned up with wiping. So, since you asked for comments, my comment would be that you might consider all burners and no grill or griddle pan, and just buy a grill/griddle pan that you can wash and put away. Here's a link to one that caught my eye in a catalog - $98. Here is a link that might be useful: Napa Style griddle/grill pan...See More36" Thermador Induction Cooktop opinions?
Comments (8)We have a 36" Thermador induction cooktop that hasn't skipped a beat in the 15 months of heavy use since it was installed. There are no annoying noises, no clicks or buzzes. The fan starts up if you have set the power to high (9, 9+, boost), but it's low pitched, hard to hear unless you listen for it. There are individual timers for each hob. You can boost on 3 of the 5 hobs simultaneously. The maximum power from the largest hob is 4.6 kW on boost (roughly equivalent to about 35000 BTU) - that will bring 8 qts of water to boil in under 10 minutes. There are 19 power levels. Setting or adjusting anything is very simple and intuitive on the keypad. There are various error modes, like an overflow mode which will shut the cooktop down if a pot boils over. This hasn't happened to me yet, but it seems like a nice safety feature. I haven't learnt how to program it yet because I'm too lazy. Even without the program functions, I'm thrilled every time I use it. I've seen the recent complaints about Thermador induction, but there have been many posts from happy owners. I haven't had anything to complain about yet. Cheryl...See MoreConvex oven: Bosch side-swing, Electrolux, Thermador, Miele?
Comments (70)That's a good question, wekick. Miele recipe book for combi steam oven does not have any recipe that use full grill with moisture, however, there are recipes that use combi mode full grill with 0% moisture. From Miele demonstrator's word when I took their cooking classes, she said that by default Miele oven retains some moisture during cooking. For the plain oven, there is a crisp function to release moisture which is done by opening up valve. This is akin to Wolf convection and convection humid mode in their CSO. For Miele combi, you have the option of setting moisture level to 0% to force the oven to release all the moisture possible. Despite there is no recipe in the book using grill with some moisture, the advertisement in Miele catalogue does claim that it is good for fish and meat. My self, I have got a pretty good result with white fish marinaded in sweet miso (saikyo miso fish) cooked in full grill combi mode with some moisture. It is cooked skin side up towards to grill. With preheated grill, and some humidity. outside is brown fairly quickly, and pretty much when the marinade starts to burn due to high sugar content, cooking is done....See MoreKitchen Appliance Choice - Cafe, Bosch, Thermador. Thoughts?
Comments (16)Another thing to consider is the general standard for your neighborhood and type of home. Is it geared more towards families or retirees? If your area tends to have a lot of larger families, a double oven might be more attractive for resale down the line. It really comes down to how you cook, though. While you might not know many people in the new area right now, I'm sure you'll make friends! For me, personally, I'd go with the Bosch Benchmark double oven with side-swing doors and keep the microwave drawer the builder is providing. Big induction fan here too. If you do go with that Thermador gas range top, I'm assuming you've factored in a powerful hood and make up air, right?...See Moredorag23
