Does anyone here use a greenhouse? Does the sun bake yours?
Comments (3)Howdy, I too have an 8x12 green house. Wish it was larger, or better yet, a solarium built to the house. Inside are larger plants that no longer fit in the house. Citrus, Agaves, a few Aloes, Olive tree, variegated Ginger, and a few other odds and ends. Plants are kept in the gh during winter months..once temps warm up, plants are set outdoors. With utility prices, why pay extra when plants do well outside, not to mention easier to manage...? The first year it was erected, 'December, Christmas present,) on the coldest night of the year, the heater went out. In the process, I lost either 32 or 37 plants which froze. I cried, literally cried. After that dreadful night, we figured the problem and made sure the gas heater was working. We added an electric heater in case something went wrong with the gas again. We also purchased a temp/guage/alarm. The guage displays indoor, outdoor and gh temps and humidity. If temp drops to 45F, the alarm beeps. The guage is kept in the house. Mike, although Feb is cold, 'usually the coldest month of the year,' the sun is stronger and will burn certain plants. I hesitate adding shading since most plants are sun lovers, and eventually adapt to strong rays. During summer, gh temps reaches 117F+. This last summer, especially July, temps rose 140 and higher. Even with two opened vents and the storm/screen door ajar. Although my gh is on the small side, it's great having extra space. Don't know what I'd do without the extra room. It's a great investment, especially for those of us who have, more than a few, plants. lol. Toni...See MoreAnyone grow Mexican Plum or other native plums?
Comments (2)I'd go more by 'softness' than color. If, with a bit of pressure you can make a dent, they're likely ready to use. We'll pick about 3 gallons of plums, put them in a sink to wash off the dust & stuff, then into a 3 gallon stock pot with a cup or so of water, put the lid on, then simmer at low heat for a few hours until its mush. Then into a colander to drain, catching the juice. Then onto making jelly by adding sugar and pectin. Another sign that they're ripe is the raccoons just ate them all. :-)...See MoreDoes anyone use a stoneware baking brick?
Comments (13)First off--no, you never line a stone. The point of using one is that it's porous, and pulls a bit of moisture from the foods baked on it, giving a more crisp crust. So no, don't line it, if you're going to do that, you might just as well bake on a metal pan. Second--the stone should be heated up well--that means a good 30 minutes (I have some recipes that say an hour--before you put the food on it. Thirdly--DON'T COOK FROZEN PIZZA ON YOUR STONE UNTIL YOU READ THIS. You CANNOT put frozen food on your preheated stone without risking breaking the stone. If you want to cook a frozen pizza, you're going to have to defrost it before putting it on the hot stone. Note, that if you put the frozen pizza on an unheated pizza stone, the stone probably won't crack, but it takes so long for the stone to get up to temperature, that your pizza won't cook properly, anyway. I like baking on ceramic, although I just use unglazed Italian quarry tiles--they're easier to store, way cheaper, easier to fit to your oven (they can be cut to fit your oven racks--as long as you leave a 1" perimeter for airspace), and if one breaks, you just have to spend a few cents to replace that one. Definitely the best surface for baking things like artesan breads and foccacia....See MoreDoes anyone have a bread machine that bakes really well?
Comments (16)Shambo, on Amazon's home page--at the very top of the screen next to where it will say 'Shambo's Amazon.com', click on 'Today's Deals'. The first set of 'deals' will be the 'Gold Box Deal of the Day.' Just below the Gold Box Deal will be the Lightning Deals. There will be a bunch of these limited time deals...scroll across to see all the current ones and upcoming ones. They have a time limit on claiming the deal & completing the purchase. I think it's a couple of hours but you'll see that when you click on an item & add it to your cart. Another tip...when you get to the Lightning Deals, look over on the right hand side of the screen--Click on 'Sort by Category' to hone in on your area of interest (vs having to scan thru a bunch of junk you have zero interest in.) Yesterday, there were a bunch of small appliance deals (Zo, Panasonic, Cuisanart, etc.)--not so much today. :-( Anyway, happy hunting....See MoreOklaMoni
