Grocery prices are outrageous
Comments (25)Careful there marie-ndcal, bringing up the "W" store might get you banned from it! Remember I was ordered by one here to stay out of Malwart when I shared an experience! And when she bans you, the "go-gurlers" will chant their mantra too! LOL There's lots of reasons for the prices fluctuating. Some good, some not so good. I understand that costs go up for utilities, labor, etc so I fully understand normal price increases, but one of my peeves is when the same store has locations within a few miles of each other and the prices vary, sometimes significantly. Walmart and Target are this way and the cost for fuel/transportation is clearly not the reason. Their COGS are the same and they come from the same supplier, probably on the same invoice so the cost to them is the same. Labor costs, taxes and utilities would be comparable so that can't be a rationalization. Store volume and size doesn't seem to make a difference. And curiously, the lower-affluent area will have the higher prices and I don't think they can rightfully blame it on shoplifting either. So 'splain that one to me will ya? I don't look close enough at the more conventional grocery chains to notice, plus I don't buy as many groceries as I used to since I'm eating out more. And yes, I found out (and got lectured for it!) that Target is cheaper on a lot of things than is the "W" place that is so beloved and rabidly defended by some. Perhaps the Walton family is larger than I realized? :D I still track prices on a lot of things. I like watching how the prices run. It has saved me a lot over the years. And I have my buying quirks as do most everyone. I have limits on what I'll spend for certain things. For instance there's just no way I'll pay $2+ for a pound of grapes. I will go without them, especially when they're not so good to start with! I do wonder though on sugar - I wonder if the change from 5# to 4# isn't at least partially because of people doing less baking these days. With slice and bake cookies, cake and brownie mixes and canned pie fillings people might not be using as much sugar at one time and sales might have dropped a bit where dropping the size and price a bit could have helped their sales at least stabilize. Factor in the sales going to artificial sweeteners, dieters and yes some loss to the Chicken Littles ranting that sugar is such a killer. No stats on it, purely speculation, but it would make some sense for the downsizing. And yes I realize that there was a sugar spike at a few times so it would sound cheaper and yes they could have dropped price less proportionately that what they should. I also notice smaller bags of flour getting more shelf space which suggests that the smaller bag flour sales are increasing....See MoreNeed your best arguments for why gas is best!
Comments (48)Great advice so far-- I hesitate to offer my suggestion, but prehaps it will add something. I was very much in the same position as you. Hated my electric coils and excited about getting a gas range. Unfortuantely before my renovation could even begin, the coils just stopped working-- so I HAD to buckle down and buy something as a temporary means of boiling water, etc. So while investigating "hot plates/electric burners" I came across induction stand alone units. WAYYY more expensive than typical $20 units and I wondered way. did some investigating and then decided it would be worth it just to get a little taste of what induction is really like-- who knows, if I loved it, I might just go with that permanently. I doubted I'd love it, but I also figured there must be a good reason why so may people loved them so much. So I bought a "Mr. Induction" off amazon-- I think it was around $150. WOW! It is merely a stand alone, so it doesn't have the power what I will some day enjoy, but the power is truely on par with what I have experinced with a typical gas range-- and is somehow even more responsive! I've never used a super high end gas range, so I can't compare induction to that, but I had problems with keeping a very low flame steady, but with the Mr. Induction, it can go REALLY low and it is completely steady. The "flame" never goes out. I also got it hot enough to stirfry with-- merely satisfactory performance, but I imagine a true induction drop with at least double to power of my little stand alone will be fantastic to stir fry with. Anyway, I encourage you to try the stand alone induction unit. It will show your husband you are taking his concerns really seriously and it isn't that much of an expense in the whole scheme of things-- plus you can use it in the future to keep things warm during a buffet dinner party, or even just sell it-- super easy resale on Craigslist, for sure! And you might just find that you love the technology anyway! How cool is it that you can place a sheet of newspaper on the cooktop, put your skillet on top, fry up chicken that splatters grease everywhere, then bunch up the greasy newspaper and toss when you are done? Easy clean up, no gas fumes, little heat loss into your room kicking up work for the air conditioner and consistent and fast temperature control. I'm a convert-- maybe you will be too! Cost can be kept down-- my GE cooktop is $1500. You can get wall ovens pretty cheap. I imagine you can certainly get a middle brand range induction cooktop and wall oven for less than a high end gas range. And I like having the cooktop and oven it seperate locations. good luck!...See MoreGrocery Prices for Today.
Comments (16)I shopped last week at Sharp Shopper. Celery, 69â, broccoli 59â a pound, cucumbers 39â each. They had Domino Pure Cane sugar 5 lbs 2.99. I'm stocking up on that; I have 20 lbs now. I only buy one brand of milk; it is $3.49 a gallon. The best find for me was WHITE potatoes. They had 10 lb bags for $7 something and 5 lb bags for $3 something. They also had 10 lb bags of the same potatoes, in bags that were marked "unclassified." On the bag it explained what that meant: misshaped, possibly a cut or black spot, etc. They were $2.99 a bag. I got the unclassified ones. They are perfect after you peel them. I've made soup, and today I made potato salad. They have that good earthy flavor that white potatoes have. A few are big enough to bake. I will surely buy those again if they have them when I need potatoes. BTW on the bag it said "Grown in the USA." I do love a bargain. Comments (9)Canadian here...Walmart price matches here, with the flyers & the phone apps. They do not, to my knowledge, offer the same card savings as Lisa mentions in her first post. I use the price matching Lisa,as well as numerous coupons and rebate deals, whenever they 're offered. I do use CO51 all the time I also utilize a lot of online coupons or groceries,as well as for meals/dining out. My best coupon dinner yet was about one yr ago,in an East Side Marios.....Our meal totalled approx. $48.00...after using whatever apps, coupons, and cards I had at that time, dinner total price only came to 53 cents.........See More- 2 years ago
