What's for Dinner ... Friday?

It is so pretty out there today, here in Ohio. I know we could use some rain to green up the grass though.

My main meal: meatloaf, baked potato and skins, sliced orange tomatoes, and half an Amish fried apple pie.

What will be your main meal today?

I sampled some of my un iced cake so when it comes time for me to eat, I shall have a slice of ham heated up and make a sandwich with Miracle Whip, lettuce and tomato and that will be it for today. Your supper sounds really good Shirley.

Well lunch was not very exciting-we ate at my work around 2. My husband came to where I work with turkey & Swiss sandwiches & apples & oranges. I enjoyed the sandwich but am not a big fruit eater-oh well at least I had something to eat. The office next door closes at 2 on Fridays leaving me the only person in the building until we close at 4. So when I am scheduled to work on Fridays my husband & little dog Biscuit come to "babysit" me. Which I greatly appreciate!!

We shared some blue crab nachos for lunch which were very good. For dinner we are going to use the remaining grilled shrimp from last night add some homemade Pico made with Vidalia onions and fresh tomatoes and lime juice a little shredded lettuce and wrap it up in a flour tortilla. I have cantaloupe and fresh cherries for desert. The wind is gusting very strong here at the beach today, I was wondering if we were going to blow away! Other than that beautiful day here today. They served home made fresh cooked potato chips with our lunch, they were fried dark and seasoned with Fajita seasoning... Omg mmm... I could eat a sinful amount of those.

Its confusing because it goes against what has been the accepted common knowledge since perhaps the early 1800's. The farmers growing them and calling them yams, are wrong. The grocers selling them and calling them yams, are wrong. The companies canning them and labeling them as yams, are wrong. The people who first introduced them to the United States called them yams, perhaps to distinguish them from the different variety of sweet potatoes that were already on the market, they were wrong too. Even some sites on the web that try to explain the difference with helpful images like this one: http://www.frugallivingnw.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/yams-sweet-potatoes-is-there-a-difference-2.jpg are wrong. (hint they are all sweet potatoes, despite their labels) So it is not at all surprising that what I learned at a young age from my mother and grandmother, and which was continually re-enforced every Thanksgiving or every time I visited a grocery store, is wrong. I have never eaten a true yam in my life, and seeing some of the pictures of what a true yam look like, I probably never will. Does it harm me in any way if other people choose to call some varieties of sweet potatoes "yams", no. It merely bothers the pedantic part of me a little when someone asserts something to be a fact, when they are in fact wrong.

Jasdip, lol....I was absolutely being silly, but it turns out that the history behind the colorful name is murky, at best. All of the many stories go pretty much down the same path...it's fast and easy! We babysat for the two little girls who live next door with their grandfather, our much loved neighbor. He had his first date in the many years since his dear wife died! These little girls have real separation anxiety issues and this was the first time that he had left them at night since he took them into his home. I fixed 'breakast for dinner'; pancakes made to order, ham sausage patties, scrambles eggs, and fresh fruit. I let them pick out their pancake ingredients from little bowls of chocolate chips, chopped apple, blueberries, peanut butter, nuts, apricot preserves, and strawberry jam. Just one pancake each, but they really loved their whole supper.

I have sirloin steak cooking in a thick tomato and onion gravy and rice cooking to go with the gravy plus some black eye peas. One of my favorite meals.

Broiled salmon, Spanish rice (rice is from Spain and I added a few things), and a lettuce salad. A glass of Chardonnay for the missus and water for me.

I made a chile-cheese-rice casserole and added crumbled sausage, to make it a complete meal. For dessert, ice cream cones/nutty buddies.

Shrimp season opens tomorrow, and my husband has a lot to do to finish getting the boat ready, so he isn't coming home tonight, so I went to a supermarket that has really good fresh squeezed juice and got a quart and some made in the deli pimento cheese and had that with some crackers.

Oh dear....not the ideal dinner for us! We had been invited to some close friends' home for dinner over a week ago. I asked if there was anything I could bring and she insisted that everything was covered.....she was making lasagna. She turned down my offer of a salad.

I love lasagna, but I have a real problem with wheat pasta. When I make it, it's a veggie layered meal, with ricotta, Italian sausage, gooey and delicious but no wheat noodles.

She had yummy appetizers, puff pastry treats mostly, which I adore but can't eat much of. Luckily, there was a veggie platter.

Her lasagna smelled and tasted divine, but I knew if I ate more than a bite that I'd suffer all weekend. And NO salad!

I guess I'm going to have to declare myself 'wheat free' to my friends. I've never been to a restaurant or dinner where there were zero options and this was a bit of a shock.

We stopped at McDonald's on the way home so I could have their Southwestern salad with grilled chicken. Robert stuffed himself with lasagna, lol.
