New member seeking kitchen layout feedback
Comments (9)Thanks all - it is terrific to get feedback from this community of "TKO" folks. Marcolo - I haven't decided if the island will truly be out of the way on the fridge to sink run or if it wil be a hip bumping annoyance, but I hate to lose too much island capacity. Lirio - good thought on the best path for clearing from the DR MArinesgirl - It will be fun to see your kitchen evolve too! We are completely switching up the appliance locations. Currently: the fridge is where the range will be the cooktop is located on the island and the oven/microwave is where the fridge will be This doesn't work for so many reasons.... family members like to contemplate life while standing in front of the fridge, blocking my path; guests like to stand in front of the oven, and if someone is helping clean up as I am cooking we are bumping into each other and I am banging my ankles on the open dishwasher.... Do I sound ready for a new kitchen? We are also, on the advice of our friend/contractor, recessing the fridge 3" into the wall. Green - The garden window is pre-existing. As this is a N facing window in the PNW the extra light from my garden window is a sanity saver in the winter. Your comment will get me to examine what we have planted on the arbor to be sure that we are getting effective green screening in the summer. Thanks all!...See MoreNew Builder, New Plan: Seeking Advice?
Comments (25)@D.L. Thanks for the advice. I did add windows to the left side of the house. I will do what can be done to stagger them from the neighbor's windows. I will use obfuscating glass for the bathrooms, but clear glass for Bedroom B. I had thought about clerestory windows, skylights and solar tubes for adding light but did not incorporate any of those ideas. Now that you bring it up I will look at where I can add clerestory windows. However, I have concerns regarding leakage from and cleaning of skylights. And I have heard that solar tube lighting can be harsh?? I am still thinking about how best to address the kitchen storage issue. I will look into your suggestions and play around with moving walls and the refrigerator. Maybe I am focused on the wrong thing but I am used to seeing kitchens with upper cabinets. I think it would look odd to have a kitchen that size with 9' ceilings and no upper cabinets. Once I have the rooms in the right place and about the right size I will post in the room specific forums to nail down the details. I was going to go a different route with the drop zone and buy or build 4 cabinets that would line up perpendicular to the garage door wall. That would provide a little separation/definition of the Cafe and Sun room areas. I would like to have a formal entrance but I don't think there is enough space if the doors are centered. That is why I pushed it to a corner. Later we could add a half wall and a column or two [or whatever] to create a small vestibule, if we felt like we just had to have a formal entrance. With respect to centering the dining room doors, I was trying to achieve what @yellowducky is proposing without having to add more hall space. By having the doors offset to the right and the table pushed left I was hoping to create an implied aisle way. Obviously, I need to rethink it. Finally, I agree with you. If I had unlimited amounts of money to spend I would hire an architect, and a Girl Friday, and a Body Guard, and a Personal Trainer, etc. :) @lori_inthenw_gw Point taken. @yellowducky I totally agree with you about the stairs. I originally had them orientated that way but I was concerned about the head room at the top of the stairs due to the slope of the roof. Also having them orientated the way you suggest requires a hallway running from the end of the top of the stairs back to the Master Bedroom wall. I will do the calculations to see if there is enough headroom. I will also work on the other items you point out. My square footage goal is more than 3000 but less than 4100, excluding garage. Maximum of 3000 on the first level....See Morekitchen remodel - seeking ideas and feedback
Comments (43)"I can’t remember the last time someone was loading or unloading the dishwasher while someone was prepping or cooking. I usually load after dinner has wrapped up and unload in the morning after it has cycled overnight." Are you the only person in your home? Then you probably won't have an issue with it when you're alone. Just don't run it while you're working in that space b/c it's not pleasant working over a running DW. If you're not the only person in your home, are you saying that every single person never tries to put a dirty dish in the DW while you're prepping? No one ever gets a drink of water or has a snack and tries to put the dirty dishes in the DW? Are you also saying you always unload the DW in the morning before any new dirty dishes are created (including from an evening snack)? You must have very a disciplined family and be very militant about it! I know that neither my DH nor I have time in the morning to unload the DW and since we both get home rather late, either we're finishing up the dishes from the night before or we're finally unloading the DW -- while someone else is preparing that night's dinner. I guess we have very different lives. (It was worse when the kids were still in elementary/middle/high school -- we had even less time!) . This is your Kitchen, we can just advise you of good/best practices and design...what you do with your Kitchen in the end is up to you. At least you're making an informed decision with as much information as possible and, if there are issues later (I hope there aren't for your sake), you won't be taken by surprise. Good luck with your project!....See MoreSeeking curb appeal and courtyard feedback (Zone 9a, Sunset 11)
Comments (1)I also thought of incorporating a low planter behind the plants in the courtyard area (like the photoshop image) or even some potted plants among the in-ground plantings to play with the heights and give it more separation of space but still primarily living/green....See Morearialvetica
