To torture or not to torture

These are three examples of what you're likely to get depending on how you grow your seedlings.

Leftmost, 2.5 years old, grown very hard in 5:1:1. Occasional feeding, irregular watering in summer. Pruned once.

Middle, 6 months. Grown in what could be considered normal
care, in 50 percent potting soil and 50 percent perlite. Watered when
the pot is very light. It was growing out of its first 4-inch pot so it
was potted up two weeks ago.

Rightmost, same batch as the plant on the left. It was my control plant--grown in 50 percent potting soil. It has significantly more roots and grows rapidly from being pruned which had to be done repeatedly as it was refusing to branch. After a while, it got the point, I haven't touched it since autumn except to pot it up last week. If I had not pruned it relentlessly, I'm guessing it would be a giraffe by now--about a foot tall.

Bonus pic. I wish it was red.

To counteract the pinkness. And because it is my most precious plant. P. brevicaule

Oh and also check out this link. I had one---ONE!---plant in the whole world at the time. Look what happened now.
