Plum tree advice - dead branches

Hi,

I have a Victoria Plum Tree in my garden and one large branch of it has totally died this summer. The rest of the tree doesn't look as healthy as it did last year and there are not as many plums. All leaves on the dead branch are brown and the plums also died on this section of the tree. I would be grateful of some advice on what might have caused this and whether to remove the dead sections. Unfortunately, the affected branch is quite a big portion of the tree. If I leave the dead branch, will it recover next year?

There are plums growing and ripening well on the other branches. I have tried to water the tree as we have had very dry conditions at times this Spring and Summer,

I have attached a picture illustrating the problem.

Thanks,

Steve
