Thundercloud Plum sparse
Comments (5)I have a question about the thundercloud plums. I planted 20 in my backyard last spring. All but 1 came back beautifully. We do have beetles and I sprayed the trees recently and now 2 have dropped their leaves. We are also having a heat wave 90+ for several days. Does this sound normal for this tree? Have they given up? Did I do something incorrectly? The pesticide I used recommended 1 1/2 ounce per gallon of water. Just curious as this is my first experience with this tree....See MoreThundercloud plum tree propagation

Comments (7)wally 2007, In response to your post about rooting a plum dated June 10, you are in luck. June is in fact the optimal time for softwood cuttings of plums & cherries. The solstice is approaching, the days are long, the sun is warm and the new growth is perfect. After the cuttings root, pot them up and you have substantial rooted liners by September which will overwinter well. Why other posters refer you to taking plum cuttings late in the year is a mystery????????? As you can see, I've been taking rose cuttings today. The procedure is the same. Take your softwood cuttings from current growth, remove the bottom leaves, treat with hormone, either powder or liquid. Stick in media of 50/50 peat & perlite. Place immediately under mist or fog during daylight hours. If you don't have mist or fog you can use a coldframe, out of the sun, and keep the lid closed. Others have had luck with homemade propagation chambers enclosed in plastic, just remember to keep it out of sun so it will not cook. Cherries & plums are easily rooted. In about a month your cuttings will be rooted, that's the beauty of doing it this time of year. Prop houses on nurseries from coast to coast are going full speed ahead to take advantage of the long days. NOONE roots cuttings of plums in the fall, what possible advantage would there be to that? Why don't knowledgeable posters respond to Wally2007's post? Has noone here ever taken a softwood cutting?...See MorePlum tree advice - dead branches
Comments (9)Thanks for your help/comments. I did have the lawn treated with weedkilling herbicide and fed with a granular fertilizer earlier in the year by Greenthumb, a well know lawn maintenance company here in the UK. I was wondering myself whether they sprayed too near the tree as the grassed area probably goes over the top of the tree's roots. However, the same treatment was done last year and the tree looked a whole lot healthier, so it could be the dry Spring and Summer. That said, the tree now looks almost like it is wilting all the time. I have fed it recently with some plant food and that doesn't seem to have improved the situation. I took off the bad branch (sawed it off) and the wood looks in good clean condition. All light beige/brown colour, no signs of disease....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
