Canning blackberries for baking

On page 18 of the BBB, there are instructions for canning Berries for Baking. "Wash berries. Simmer berries until hot throughout, adding just enough water to prevent sticking. Process as for Berries, Hot Pack." If I am understanding this correctly, they recommend not adding sugar to the berries if you are planning on using them for baking later?

We like to use frozen berries for cobbler in the winter months. This year I would like to save the freezer space and put up some that are shelf stable. Can anyone comment on the quality of canned blackberries this way vs frozen, if the intended use for baking?
