A Somewhat Foggy Morning

I really enjoy taking pictures in the soft fog of a morning which dissipates in a few hours. The sunlight is so harsh here that the roses never look good in pictures even when they look fine in real life in when the sun is shining. I'm afraid there's nothing new here; too many roses are not yet in bloom, but I plan to discontinue taking off the buds on at least some of them soon because even I'm getting tired of taking pictures of the same roses over and over. Yet I keep doing it.....

Looking back through these photos, I do see what you mean, Marlorena, about Ingrid's house and garden, as shown here, being somewhat reminiscent of a Chinese landscape. I studied Chinese landscape painting, gardens and poetry, etc a long time ago as part of an investigation into the influence of philosophical Taoism on Chinese culture over the centuries.

I may have forgotten a lot of the details now, but some of the beauty, feeling and meaning will stay with me forever. The lonely cabin retreat, surrounded by swirling mists, precariously perched in the midst of the overwhelming grandeur of natural land formations, as the hermit scratches a humble living, a fragile domesticity, from the rocky mountain soil.... the only thing missing at Ingrid's place unfortunately, would be the wild, gushing streams....

..oh these are much better... it's nice to see the changes even if it's the same area...

... I also like to take photos in lower light levels... all looking really good there today....

These are lovely photos, Ingrid, so romantic. Your SdlM looks so different to mine. Mine is much paler, and papery.

I have the same problem with the light. The bright light just washes the colour and definition from the photos. Not that I have much to take photos of! I seem to spend my time removing what I've planted and replanting on a continuous cycle.

I'm honored by your appreciation of my garden. It means a lot to me. Juliet, thank you for your comment about Cottage Rose. After a year of not pruning I pruned it last winter and it seemed to like it. Audrey, my Cottage Rose came from Chamblee's in Texas. I don't know what conditions you have but in my hot, dry garden it's done very well. Not many people grow this old Austin any more but I'm quite fond of it. The common willow with this appearance is 'Kilmarnock'. It is often traded as 'Pendula' but strictly speaking there is no cultivar with that name, the term instead being var. pendula, with there being two cultivated representatives - a now infrequent, female 'Weeping Sally' and a recently much sold, male 'Kilmarnock'. As with all weeping variants it is much preferred to have these placed where the branches can cascade, instead of being clipped (or browsed, in this case) to produce a silly perched or truncated effect.

Nice shots. Can you imagine how many insects are being devoured by those spiders? Most likely a type of funnel-web spider given all three pix have the funnel showing. Mary lu- we notice them more now because there's more of them to notice. All the babies that survived throughout summer have set up shop. tj

Marlorena, I'm so glad you see a difference. I'm here every day so it's difficult to judge.

Titian, I wonder what causes the differences in SdlM. Other people have mentioned the pale flowers. You'd think with my rotten soil, heat and drought this rose would be a mess, but it's been one of my most reliable roses.

Trust me, if you could see my list of discarded roses, you'd feel better. I'm afraid and ashamed to count them, the number is so huge. After more than eight years, more than half are young roses, which really discourages me sometimes since they take so long to get going. I've concentrated more on tea roses now, although I have a feeling many will outgrow their allotted spaces. I'm not too fond of Chinas except Mutabilis and many of the Austins didn't do well here. I always feel that no matter what I do I've made mistakes again, but I just keep muddling along.

So beautiful! I didn't get a change to go to the Santa Inez area this year. I always loved the fog in the morning and the blazing hot afternoons. Your pictures remind me of that with the beautiful rolling hills, even though I know you are much farther south.

Never tire of your photos, Ingrid. Keep 'em coming! Nicknamed your place "The Misty Garden" for its palette of soft pastels set within earthen neutrals. Your home & the structure you've created with pathways, walls & shapings blend seamlessly into the setting. Even the frog's pedestal echos the bluff. Appears to have always been there, somewhere nonspecific in time, anchored ethereally to the hills. Enchanting!

..that's such a beautiful photo of 'Le Vesuve'... my plant doesn't have flowers that large as it's so small, so I hope to see something like that later on...

...your landscape, roses and glimpses of your property in the mists makes me think of China, there's something oriental about these photos in particular - not always the case....but if I didn't know I might have guessed it was in China, or nearby...

..I've also discarded any number of roses down the years, including many famous ones lauded by all sorts of people.... I think it's been more a case of right rose, wrong place, and I never did find the right place...

..always learning...

Thank you, mustbnuts, vasue and Marlorena. Your lovely comments are making me appreciate my surroundings even more, you describe it so poetically. Of course you know that it's blazing hot here and I don't take pictures when the light is bright and harsh. Fortunately we do have morning fogs, although not usually this late in the year, and the evenings are still mostly cool and everything looks so much better in a kinder light.
