Dishwasher that gets dishes reasonably dry (plastics too)

We are looking at dishwashers. I have gotten quotes on the Miele line and a KitchenAide. What is drawing me to the KA is the drying fan.

We run our dishwasher daily. Usually after dinner, empty 22 hours later, before prepping dinner.

I use a rinse aid religiously but I have to rack dry plastics. I hate it.

Is there a dishwasher out the that gets things dry? I like the Miele but I don't want wet dishes. What is the drying performance like?

Any special models I should consider?

Asko dishes are clean and dry, Unless there's a place for water to sit. It uses Turbo dry, it's a fan dry system not heated dry. Dishes shine and are dry, plus no fingerprints or water spots on the outside of the dishwasher because of the touch free stainless. I clean it a lick and a promise with a dishrag and microfiber once ever week or two. I have to stand back and really look for any spots. My old dishwasher front was always disgusting. My husband and child don't think about the water they drip down the front. I bought the top of the line, D5654XL with tubular handlen. It holds a ton of dishes and the racks are flexible, tines or no tines. They move around to suit whatever you're washing. Good luck in your search.

Same with the Miele with the pop open door. The best part is I can put plastic anywhere and it doesn't melt. The plastic dries except if it has a rim that collects water and I didn't take care to position it to fully drain.

The SS panel doesn't show fingerprints.

Oh - and it cleans the dishes - no rinsing is needed.

OliverTwist, Rinse aid is not a new thing to the automatic dishwashing process. It has been available for 50+ years. It was touted in the past as an optional additive to eliminate water spotting on dishware, but the parameters have changed. As other have advised, rinse aid is required for proper drying results in all dishwashers nowadays. They're engineered with the expectation that the consumer will use rinse aid. You can choose to not use it but the trade-off is much more residual moisture on the items. Many units now do not have heated dry, instead relying on heat retained in the items from the final rinse along with rinse aid to promote evaporation. Units that do have heated dry are running with lower-wattage heating elements, and the heat may cycle on/off during the dry period instead of remaining on continuously as in the past.

I've had 2 Miele DW over the last ten years, one when I lived in Southern California and one that I bought when we moved to Virginia, and have never had trouble with wet dishes. Like other posters, I sometimes have a few water drops, but not enough to have to leave anything on a counter to dry. I did wonder when I moved east if the Miele wouldn't dry as well in a more humid climate, but it hasn't been a problem. I love Miele dishwashers.

Yeah sparky my mothers 1971 KA was loud. It would start drawing water and in a few seconds you would hear the low growling start..and continue for 20 seconds and then the wash arm would start moving and it would keep picking up speed as more water entered the tub. It would draw water for 2 minutes and 20 seconds(yes I timed it) For the rinses after this 2 minute and 20 second fill the DW would continue to spray the water for 20 more seconds then start draining it out. It had 3 short 3 minute rinses with clear water running in throughout most of the rinse. Funny thing was that when you pulled it out from the cabinets you could see the heater fan with no filter...it had a forced air heater and it would be drawing the air from up under the DW bottom so dirt and everything else could have gotten sucked up in there. Well I am still alive. I could hear the DW upstairs in my bedroom! So yeah todays DW are much quieter.

As an FYI - I recently ran a wash cycle in my Miele with the open air dry that contained ONLY plastics. I found some old Tupperware I wanted to keep so I filled the two regular racks with only Tupperware and ran it on the express cycle (the “old” 38 minute cycle not the new intensive wash cycle) To my surprise - they were all dry except for the usual pooling in the lips of the lids. I unloaded them shortly after the cycle completed. I thought it would be a good test of how well it can dry plastics.

One of the reasons I chose my K-A was the heated dry. Love the fact that things come out not only clean, but DRY! ...and warm :)
