New house - where to tastefully put the TV

My husband and I just purchased a new house. We are donating a lot of our current furniture and getting new furniture (the old stuff is ratty). I definitely do not have a decorator's eye so I need help!

I have attached a couple pictures. The pictures contain the current owners furniture.

Two questions:

1) This living room is 13x24. Would a sectional fit better or a sofa/chair combo?

2) Where the heck do we put the tv??? In our current living room the tv is mounted on the wall over the fireplace, but I don't want to cover the pretty woodwork over the fireplace in this home!

Here's an idea. [Click on it to see it bigger] This layout keeps the pantry door where it is for ease of bringing groceries in from the garage and includes a pass-through b/w the pantry and kitchen that has a door. When visiting the pantry, you can put the items for the kitchen on the pass-through counter for later retrieval in the kitchen. In the kitchen, above the pass-through, is the TV mounted at an angle so it's visible for more people/tasks. (More later) Cleanup Zone... The Cleanup Zone is separated from the Prep and Cooking Zones. Dish storage is across from the DW in the island. There are 54 inches of space for dishes, glasses, silverware. The Trash pullout is contained in the Cleanup Zone.. I toyed with putting it in the island, which is a better location, but I think you need the 24" of space it would have taken from the dish storage on the end of the island more. You don't want upper cabinets, so that means your dishes, etc. will have to be stored in base cabinets. Prep Zone... You have at least two Prep Zones: Primary on the island; Secondary b/w the cleanup sink and range. The island Prep Zone has much more space to work with...25" on one side and over 7 feet on the other side. That 7 feet would work really well for not only large prepping projects, but also for (cookie) baking, crafts, science fair projects, school projects, wrapping gifts, etc. It's a wonderful expanse of space! Both the primary and secondary Prep Zones have a water source - making them each a truly functional Prep Zone on their own w/o having to cross over into the other Prep Zone for water. As your three youngest get older and start helping, you will really appreciate having those two Prep Zones! Cooking Zone... The Cooking Zone contains the range and, on the outside, the primary MW and wall oven. Both the cleanup sink and the island prep sink are close enough to the range to be used for draining pasta - choose the sink to use based on what else is going on in the kitchen. It's adjacent to each Prep Zone so the cooks can easily go from the Prep Zone to the Cooking Zone w/o crossing through the Cleanup Zone, crossing the other Prep Zone, or having to go around the island. The oven is located where it can be used when baking or roasting. No running around the island to put food in the oven or to check on the food or to take the food out of the oven. Snack/Tea/Coffee/Beverage Center... Snack/Tea/Coffee/Beverage Center contains a small MW for heating up snacks. I recommend a MW mounted under the upper cabinet and off the counter to keep the counter clear. There is also an under counter Beverage Cooler/Refrigerator for keeping drinks and other refrigerated snacks. There's plenty of storage for silverware, dishes, and mugs in the area for ease of access. If you drink coffee, you could even put a coffee maker there. ...

I like your proposed arrangement. Looks like you could add a t.v. on a swivel mount with a small console underneath to the right of the fireplace. As a general rule, the rug under the dining table should be 4 feet wider and 4 feet longer than the table, so it seems an 8x10 would best suit the table when fully extended.

Can you return it and get a smaller one? (I admit I think your fireplace wall is lovely and I personally wouldn't ruin it with a television. But I am a tiny minority who has lived without television for almost 30 years.) Is there another room in which to put it, or do you prefer to use this room for watching it?

If your TV doesn't fit ovver the fireplace then I would flip the seating around and go between the windows on the left if the fireplace. if the room needs a bigger TV then the corner to the left if the TV. TV size and the distance from the seating has some impact on his as well. How about couches facing each other perpendicular to the fireplace and put the tv on the wall opposite the fireplace. You could have two chairs flanking the fireplace as well, if needed.

BTW, that is a great room! I love it. Congrats on your new home!

eta: I am not a fan of sectionals, hence my suggestion. :-)

your suggestion could work! Or one sofa flanking the fireplace with the tv on the small wall above the chair in the first picture, and two chairs facing the sofa beneath the tv? There are only two of us usually watching tv (does the dog count?). So the chairs would only be used when guests are over.

I have never really tried working with sectionals. I have many friends with sectionals that work nicely, but they have more open concept layouts.

Love the room! I would do a sectional with the TV in the corner to the left of the FP where the wing chair is. You could also do a sofa and one or two chairs in an L if you don't want a sectional but I think a sectional would look better and be optimal for watching TV.

How about putting the tv on a corner stand in the corner where the wing chair is.

That is a lovely room! I would get a sofa and two chairs or two sofas. Sectionals can be very difficult to work with. We suffered with ours for 10 years. I was SO glad to get rid of it!

i agree with cyn427's suggestions.

I like cyn427's idea (I have had a room set up like that and it worked very well) but my concern is that the room may be too narrow for that since it looks like it may impeded traffic. I think the corner stand is your best option.

With two sofas facing each other in front of the FP you'd have to always look sideways to watch TV.

Beautiful room. If they'd fit, I'd put two full-size sofas facing each other with the fireplace centered between them, coffee table between them…. or at least one sofa with two chairs facing it, table between the two chairs. Console table bend the sofa with the back to the front door.

Mount the TV on an articulating arm, wall mount, on the wall directly across from the fireplace. You can pull it out and angle it any way you want when you want to watch it, then push it back against the wall when you're entertaining and don't want it in the way.

OR…do an L-shape, sofa facing the FP as it is now and two chairs facing the wall where the piano is, wall-mount TV on the wall to the left of the FP.

What a pretty room! Congratulations on your new home. I would definitely put it at an angle in the corner currently with the wing chair.

Love the feel of the room! i'd out the sofa a couple of feet away from the wall, closer to the fireplace, then put the two wing chairs at a 90 degree angle to the fireplace on the right side, and the TV on the wall above the current position of the wing chair. That would allow you two to watch sitting in the chairs. If you prefer watching tv sitting on the sofa, then you could put the sofa in that spot and the two arm chairs facing the fire place.

I think I would want a corner entertainment center where the wing chair is, the TV there on a swivel, built in look, matching the existing wood work. I am not sure a sofa would fit perpendicular with out obstructing all traffic, perhaps two love seats or a love seat and chairs combo? I do not see a sectional working at all. What are your plans for where the piano sits..that is another place for a TV...particularly if you don't want it to be a focal point.

good thought arcy_gw! I don't have any plans for where the piano is currently sitting. There is a window hidden behind that piano... I don't really like covering it up! I was currently half thinking of putting my 90 lb lab's dogbed in that little cove! He has to have a place to sleep in the living room or he sleeps in my lap! Although upon a second look, that spot is way larger then I was picturing it... if I put his bed in there he will have half the room!
