Timing of plantings; how do YOU know 'when'
Comments (17)How do YOU decide "when" to plant your various veggies? Me...well, I figure many seeds are cheap and I can sow early and if the weather holds I may get an early harvest. If not, I resow in two weeks and have only lost a few seeds that were probably extras anyway. With more expensive seeds I'll wait or only put in a few hoping for an early start. If I were farming a huge area this would not be the mindset I'd use. You can't give many absolutes with gardening since conditions change from day to day and year to year. It keeps gardening challenging...and maddening at times. If one wants to fuss with season extenders many dates can be pushed a bit. If you want things easier and less stressful you can give up possible earliness and wait a bit. In some areas this might mean things get too hot at the other end of the season so you have to decide what you want to try. Don't let worry stop you and figure some things will not do well. Every year it seems that conditions are such that some veggies grow great and others don't do so well. Two years ago when it was very hot and dry I had amazing peppers. Last year with cooler temps the peppers weren't so good but lettuce grew much longer into the summer. We can't control everything and the varying answers people give you may well reflect the way they choose to deal with the uncertainty. If you want to garden you will have to accept that not all will go perfectly no matter how much you plan and how well you care for your plants. But planning and good care will usually give you a fine harvest...not perfection, but close enough....See MoreHomes Where Smokers Live - How Did You Get Rid of Odor?
Comments (38)cmarlin - if we keep them, I'll clean them, but no paint, I think they look pretty rich and even though old, I actually like them. I think I'll probably put in something like Silestone in a mocha color and it would look great. What will determine whether we keep them is if I can find a good match that will appropriately fit. kelpermaid, I think they painted in the house recently, though I'm not sure - going to try and find out. I know they've lived there for 6 years, so if they are the only people who smoked there in the last 25 years since it was built, at least 19yrs of it had no smokers - but not sure how bad the last 6 years have been. creekside - now you've TOTALLY confused me! In some cases, homes need to dry to the interior. Kilz will prevent that. So will some other products. A spot of Kilz here and there won't hurt anything. Rolling it on all the interior walls may promote mold growth. So, if you are going to use Kilz after cleaning with TSP or something like it, you can't paint everything?? I'm sure I'm not understanding something here - I'll try to read the info on the link you sent - maybe call the co. next week. Carol_from_NY -thanks, I think my cleaning list is growing by leaps and bounds. The way I'm going, I may have to put my mother on the top of the car and tell her to hold on to the luggage rack for the trip up I'm going to have so many supplies to take! Thanks for mentioning the steamer, I have one and wouldn't have remember to think about taking it. I've never heard about putting gum in for smells, that's a new one. I'll try ANYTHING to get the house to normal. Thanks for all you suggested. Well, at this time we are in limbo. Inspections turned up a few problems, two problems that could be major, one that definitely is and has to do with a foundation failure. I am trying to get the owners to agree to fix what's on the repair list I sent them - which isn't everything that needs to be repaired, I took on the cheaper and more easily aspects of it. Will know more next week whether the deal goes through or falls apart. Wish me luck!! Thanks again to all - everyone has been extremely helpful, and it's all appreciated! Oh, one more thing - my Mom was there during the inspection and told me they had a machine running to take the stink out and she thought it smelled better in there - was probably an ozone machine. My nose will decide (if we close on it, that is) THANKS!!!!...See MoreWhat 'Pests' have you been dealing with this winter indoors?
Comments (37)I heard from the company I got the original shipment of ladybugs from and they sent me a replacement batch. These were very much alive and unlike the first batch went straight to the aphids and are doing a good job. The first ones didn't seem to know what an aphid was and just walked past them. Not these! They climbed straight up the tree to the aphids hanging out on the flowers and new leaves. Sorry, I forget to take pictures of them vaccuuming up all the aphids and my battery ran out. These ladies can fly too and have spread out to all parts of the greenhouse. Unfortunately one of the resident spiders spun a strand and caught about 15 of them in a matter of minutes. I knocked down the thread as soon as I saw them trapped in it but am not sure the ladies escaped. They are fun to watch but I already spend way too much time in the greenhouse. I hope they like it in there and stay a while. Cory...See MoreHow do you deal with a long, skinny, floppy cutting?
Comments (55)Update: this thing is still going. I have not taken care of it at all so it's a mess. Apparently the spouse snips it off the walkway and away from the hose. Still no shoots, just the twig I snipped from the parent plant serving as trunk. Is that normal? No matter I guess. It seems happy, unlike its neighbor the kumquat. If I had known this rose wouldn't die I would have put it elsewhere...now I have an issue. :)...See Morelaticauda
