Mounting satellite dish

Was just thinking about where we will mount our satellite dish on the new house, and cringed at the thought of a 22 year old newbie puncturing 4-6 holes in a brand new roof to mount the dish.

I thought about having the contractor put frame up and paint a block on the side of the house specifically for this purpose. It'd also be nice to find a spot on the roof because it's less conspicuous... just seems like it will be harder to mount it without putting screws through the roof system.

Thoughts?

We built in 2008 and I had the satellite dish mounted on a corner fencepost about 10 feet from the house. Like you, I didn't want some kid putting holes in the house. If you have an unobstructed view of the spot in the sky where the satellites are, you don't need to put the dish higher than ground level.

Ditto a post hidden in landscaping. They're not drilling into my new roof.

Oldcrafty. I use the walmart version of GEll for my glue and regular sanded grout. Those curves can be a boogar. I just have to cut the pieces smaller. One thing that kind of helps me with the curved pieces is to lay the piece in its larger state on the curve and see where it rocks or arches over the curve. Then cut it in the center of the arch or rocking at an angle. If this is not understood I can do pictures later after I help hubby with his truck. Says she muttering I am so not mechanical but he still can not lift because of his surgery and he wants to do guy things again. :^) I want to do a small mountain on mine with a Goat because the Mountain is galled Goat Mountain. I told my friend Claire , the day before she passed away,to meet me there when I die and she said she will. It is a long story from over 40 years ago. And now hubby is back with my new medicare book. Sheese I am suddenly feeling so old.

6 TV's in 6 different rooms...figuring out satellite dish...help!

We have dish network and a 2 story house. For a while, the dish receiver in the upstairs bedroom, operated a TV in there and also a small TV we had in the kitchen. The remote for the receiver is RF and it had no problem controlling the receiver upstairs, which was quite a distance. We have since, built in an entertainment center in our family room with a 52" Sharp Aquos, easily seen and heard from the kitchen, so we don't use that RF setup, anymore, except for the spare bedroom, and it still works well. The RF controlled receiver is NOT HD, so hopefully they have such a receiver, but we don't really need the HD in the spare bedroom. HTH's Gary

If you wanted to try using it for hot water, I'm sure you could point it south, run some coil tubing in it's center for your domestic hot water to detour through, much like I did with my compost water heater system. Lining the dish with aluminum foil or black paint would probably get it pretty hot and would get most benefit when using hot water with the sun out and winterizing for freezing weather.

Here is the dish on top of a metal table stand I found at a yard sale for a couple bucks. I thought I would be able to get the bolts out of the dish to have drainage, but they won't come out. So I'll need someone to drill some holes for me, then I'll cover them with window screen, add some cactus soil, then plant with hens 'n chicks and other sedums. I will update with new pics once it's planted.

We have mounted ours onto the fascia at the gable peak. Its high enough to receive over the trees without roof holes. Our previous one was mounted low with landscaping. It became a pain because anytime there was high winds it would blow the landscaping into the dish and disrupt the signal...also mush more noticeable and they are not pretty to look at.

I don't think the post will work for us as we have woods to the south and west. I would also prefer to have it as obscure as possible (hidden up high in the roofline somewhere). I will check with the low voltage guys and contractor to see if they have any creative ideas....

Absolutely not on the roof. Whenever the roof needs work it would have to come off and then be readjusted, also the leak risk. I had them do it on the fascia as neonweb2 said also. Here is what it looks like (not mine but similar).
