What to do with this wood species mismatch?

Remodeling an entry foyer in our 1927 home. Most of the original woodwork was replaced by the previous owner with decent enough looking golden oak doors and moldings finished with clear varnish. But an original, painted closet door remained. I just stripped and sanded it only to discover it's cedar.

Unfinished, it doesn't look so bad next to the oak. But as soon as I apply anything like clear varnish or Minwax poly, it darkens up into a deep reddish brown color that really collides with the rest of the woodwork in this small room.

I really want to keep the door, it's solid wood and matches the other original doors in this old house. But I'm not sure how to finish it in such a way that works alongside all the oak.

Photo shows the oak trim, unfinished door, and samples of clear varnish applied to a piece of the door that was cut off.

Any thoughts?
