What species wood is my flooring?
Comments (7)Now last time I went to Lowes, they had some finished-in-place White Oak, and I thought it looked quite similar to my floors, so I'm going to guess White Oak too. The floors are original, circa 1948. I've had them refinished twice since I've owned the house in 15 years. It is rental property, but they do hold up well. Knowing the species might also help me figure something out for the 3rd floor. The bedrooms and hall is original hardwood, but the big living room has been covered with carpet. When I had the carpet replaced years ago, I pulled back the old hoping for a gleaming hardwood floor underneath. I found a mostly good floor with deep gouges and cuts, it looked like someone was using a circular saw right on the floor. I think I'd have to tear up the floor and start from fresh, with a little threshold going from the old wood to the new for the height difference. The carpet is showing its age and will have to be replaced the next time the apartment is empty, if nothing else. It's a shame as the hardwood would really make the room stand out. My neighbor's house (the sister house to mine, 90% identical) has the original hardwoods but without the cathedrals, and it looks great up there....See MoreUsing 2 different wood species for cabinets

Comments (7)First, ask Scherrs about the up charge unless you have a real need for pain. The cost of the wood goes DOWN and the cost of finishing goes up so the add-on price may not be as much as you'd think. Personally, I would tend to leave the cabinets plain cream, pale green or even black without glaze. Maybe gray or red if you've got real guts and want to bring home 87 variants until you find the right one. Again, just personal opinion but I'm just not liking the concept of stark white with the floor that shows as the toe kick in one of your photos. It's easy to become trapped when thinking about what looks good for each thing individually and end up with them competing for attention - detracting from the finished look. I would be tempted towards a glaze too on painted cabinets in the abstract, but feel that in your kitchen, it would compete with the floor....See MoreWood species for painted cabinets-Don’t like maple, looks too perfect
Comments (16)About 95% of your concern sounds like coatings rather than wood. Products today are simply a little more plasticky looking. Generally, as coatings get a little more durable they get a lot more plasticky. There are ways to achieve solid durability while minimizing the plastic look. The easiest being adapting color coats and protecting with lower sheen topcoats. Another option is to brush on the color coat with a thicker product. This will leave the classic brushmarks in the paint. You could also pick woods with grains known to show through such as oaks, and use a clear sealer rather than pigmented sealer. There are many ways a good coatings person can achieve a good durable finish like you are asking for on most any wood. The problem will be finding that good coatings person. Cabinetmaking, even custom cabinetmaking, is a production type activity. You may find people who have incredible knowledge of coatings, but you may also find great cabinetmakers with little knowledge of coatings....See MoreRelated Professionals
