Does your house have a "story"? Let's talk more about parti
Comments (17)A story? Well, one of the first things we did was an exercise out of the Not So Big House books: We made a list of the words we want to describe our house. In our case, we had a lot of words about function: Efficient, energy-efficient, good storage. And a lot of words about the "feel" of the house: Cozy, charming, nostalgic, friendly, inviting, light-filled. And words we don't like: Dramatic, modern, impressive, funky, trendy. That's not a story exactly, but it's kind of like setting a goal for how we want the house to work /feel /look. And we're very clear on what we want: A small (1600-1800 sf) house for the two of us after the children are gone, which will be built on our 45 acres of farmland. We want it to be age-friendly and to have all the everyday living spaces on the main level, and we want it all to be easy to clean and low-maintenance. We want every space on the main level to be used every day. We want to have a small upstairs for guests. We want a great outdoor kitchen with ample seating and a small pool. And we want it all to be mortgage-free. That doesn't feel like a story to me; it feels like a goal. Two comments on this thread with which I can really agree: While I believe in electricity, plumbing and even central air...I do love old houses. So while I would never be considered a 'purist' my perfect home would probably be similar to a car build on "Fast and Loud" LOL. I want it to look vintage, I want it to pay homage to vintage....but I want the car to go fast, stop on a dime and have air conditioning :) and I guess our not-yet-finished house's story would be 1920 meets 2014 technology I like the door picture ... but I'd say it's a cottage door leading to a small, picturesque home....See MoreDoes having a window A/C make your house unsafe?
Comments (20)hhireno - I actually just bought a really nice fan thinking it would do the trick and unfortunately it doesn't. I did check the vent :) and I feel cold air coming out, so I don't know if the room just isn't insulated well. oakley - I know you're right. In my old neighborhood, the neighbors across the street were burglarized and they just kicked the front door in. Then they opened the garage door, backed in their truck and started loading it up. The owners had just moved in, so when I saw the truck, I thought they were unloading more stuff. Were you actually in the house when they broke in? I think I'm going to bite the bullet and get something, but I haven't decided whether it will be the portable or window unit. There seems to be pros and cons to both, so I'm trying to read everything I can today. camlan - I forgot to mention that I had the kind of locks you posted in my last house and forgot all about them. I think my then husband drilled holes in the frame, so they would screw into them and would be a little more secure....See MoreHouse-warming party with no house?
Comments (42)Is this their first apartment together, or is she moving in with him into his apartment? Guess it doesn't really matter, as I wouldn't go at all, nor would I send a gift. I don't care that I'd seem to be an 'old fogie'...the mother is of our generation for cryin' out loud!! It's in very bad form. I worked in a very small, tight-knit group and one of the support staff was pregnant with her 3rd child. Our section threw her a shower at work and invited other divisions to attend also. A few people got her nice outfits, but no one got her the new car seat, crib, stroller, bedding, etc that had been 'suggested'. In fact, the majority of the people who actually attended didn't bring anything. And fewer than a dozen people came by anyway. It didn't make things weird around the office and she didn't act put out by the lack of gifts or attendance. She seemed to be happier that her closest co-worker threw the party more than anything else. So, bottom line, I wouldn't attend this event, even if you did say yes at the initial email. Simply say something has come up (you have to give yourself a pedicure, that is something!!) and say have a good time. No gift, no apologies, no hard feelings. Her few brainless buddies (and mama) will attend and she'll get a few ridiculous gifts and be over it. Save your guilty conscience for the wedding. (insert sarcasm here!)...See MoreHow unsafe could house be?
Comments (2)The only way to be certain would be to contact a structural engineer for an inspection. And look into any laws in your state regarding such things as well as a landlord's responsibility to provide a safe dwelling. One would think he holds some liability should the thing collapse, but I know nothing about PA laws....See MoreSuzi AKA DesertDance So CA Zone 9b
