House-warming party with no house?

A co-worker of mine just moved in with her boyfriend of six weeks into her first apartment. She sent out an email at work asking for our addresses so her mom, who was hosting the housewarming party for her and her BF, could mail the invite. I emailed her back. In my mind, it would be a small gathering of some friends, and I would bring her a cookbook, plant, or your usual house-warming gift. Next thing I hear her say at lunch was that in the invite would be the "list of stores" she and her BF registered for gifts at. OK, maybe I'm a bit old-fashioned in my manners, but I never heard of registering for gifts for such a party. Remember, they are not engaged, married, etc, just dating for six weeks. Or is the thought to give the gifts for her first apartment away from home? Any thoughts? Am I just a stick-in-the-mud with the notion you should not be asking others for gifts?
