Leather sectional - Can I slip cover the cushions?

We have had our leather sectional for about 8 years now, still in good shape, comfortable etc. I'm getting bored with my colors though. Turquoise carpet, carmel colored leather sectional and a neutral wall cover. I need to brighten things up a bit and was thinking of sewing up some slip covers for the top and bottom cushions of the couch. Do you think that would work? I'm also looking into repainting, just haven't come to a conclusion on color. It's difficult with the turquoise carpet but the carpet is in good shape and I can't see replacing it right now. We have 8 cats, that's why we got the leather sectional, they've scratched here and there but nothing major. It's 8 years old and looks it but in my opinion the older and more beat up, the better it looks. Do you think slip covers will work and if so, any thing special I should do to make sure they don't slip around? I'm thinking of some foam backing on the material.
