Are you a member of a local rose club or society?
Comments (28)Suji - You are welcome to stop by my open garden near Brookeville on May 29 -30. A few folks come from near and far to see the garden and how it is changing year to year. This year with the devistation of 3 Blizzards and crushed roses, I'm guessing that we will have much of the wild look of years some time ago which some visitors may welcome again. With warm weather after the snow, my rose classes appear to be a few days ahead of schedule. However, there should not be a significan shortage of bloom. We always welcome rose enthusiasts of all sorts. I am even cultivating more visits by teasing a couple of local garden clubs with OGR talks this spring to come and smell the roses - even the HT folks sneak a peak sometimes (I may have a few of them as well). Please stop by and enjoy whatever we have and share some of your OGR stories and ideas as well. We'd love to share the garden such as it may be this spring. PS - The roses have already begun to bloom. Father Hugo's rose, Old Blush and Sophie's Perpetual have already begun to bloom and some HP's buds are showing color. What's not to love about zone 6b? Comments (13)Ask and you shall receive! Sorry if these pics are so large. Still trying to figure out how to use this darn camera. Anyways, I'll put a few pics on at a time. Unfortunately I did not write down the names as I was taking the pictures so I can only guess at the names at this point. Enjoy! I have to have one of these: Another: I brought one of these home with me (Jean Pierre Crouteau: I'll post a few more shortly. Donna...See MoreDoes anyone belong to a garden club?
Comments (19)Woodyoak..I'm very sorry you got the response you did from your visit to the local garden club. I know it may seem that you'd be tattling like a kid does when somebody does wrong, but I think you need to write a letter or call the President of that club and bring this matter to her attention. It is possible that she was not aware of what you encountered. Does that club have a monthly newsletter that goes out to all its members? If she is any kind of a person/President, she would mention this in that newsletter to prevent it happening to somebody else that has disabilities. I'm sure you are not the first one that has come there with a disability, so it's obvious that it should be addressed. Are there other Garden Clubs in your area that you could check out? The lady that you said walks by your house, is she in the same Garden Club as you? If so, bring up the subject one time she is visiting? Invite her in for a cup of coffee/tea while she tours your gardens. I am on our hosptiality and worship committee at our church, and our leader has taught us to walk up to people we don't normally recognize or act like they are new, and start a conversation by introducing yourself and say "I don't think we've met before but I'm so and so and ask if this is their first time visiting with us? Sometimes it turns out to be somebody that is not a regular attendee and they've belonged to the church for many years. At least, that introduction breaks the ice and you'll remember that person and vice versa the next time. If you can't remember that person's name the next time, you'll probably recognize his/her face. A smile and a friendly Hello does wonders. I know a lot of people are reluctant to join groups or organizations because they fear not knowing anybody. That's a cope out, I'm sorry! I hope that this helps. Don't give up!...See MoreWhat kind of clubs do you belong to?
Comments (23)I am part of a dinner club that's been getting together for 14 years now. There are 7 couples -- at the beginning, our kids were all small (or not even born yet) and we got together every 2 months religiously. As the kids got older, it became harder to schedule around sports, etc...but we still get together 4-5 times a year (also, the women get together for random dinners or movies or coffees in between, and the guys get together for a long weekend every May). We take turns hosting; the host makes the entree and the guests make appetizers, sides, and dessert. We always have a theme and some of our dinners have been hilarious (many costumes have been involved). Also in a knitting group that started when my DD was leaving elementary school for middle school, and some of us moms were lamenting that we wouldn't see each other at school dropoff and pickup any more. This has been going on for about 2.5 years, once a month. There are about 6-8 of us each time, and not everyone knits. But we all drink wine :) I also attend a monthly support group for mothers of children with special needs, even though my "child" is now almost 23. I have been part of this group since he was in 1st grade so it's hard to give it up. I did leave for about 6 months when he was in college...then went back when he dropped out....See MoreKarin
