Comments (6)Thanks, Buford and Ann. I guess I'll just dig and hack at the roots the best I can and hope it stays gone -- or that new growth is healthy. Ann, you certainly are welcome to use my photo and descriptioin -- I'm flattered! I sure am heartbroken to lose that rose. I originally bought it because it was described as a climber, but in fact it grew very slowly, and it's lucky I also planted a lilac along that side of the fence. The Aloha would never have spread out and covered it like the New Dawn did the other side (I live in a city neighborhood of ugly chain-link-fenced yards that I was trying to conceal and pretty-up), but after about eight years it had finally grown to about six feet tall and was glorious. So I only had a few years to really enjoy it. And now that spot is going to look bare and ugly.... Thanks again. It's been years since I spent any time on GardenWeb and now I wonder why -- it's such a wonderful place....See MoreEncouraging growth in 1 Yr old New Dawn Roses
Comments (27)I would try that making sure to use a nice well-draining medium and keeping the leaves well watered or misted. If you had a slightly shadier spot with surrounding vegetation that might also be better, but I'm usually doing this Spring, Summer and Fall as opposed to Winter. If you have enough cuttings I'd try some in the ground and some in pots to hedge my bets. Perhaps use an inverted soda bottle with the cap removed to help hold in humidity. As Sheila alludes, buying another might be better, not only because rooting can be iffy, but also because it can take a while to grow a cutting to planting size....See MoreWeird Rose Growth. RRD or Round-up?
Comments (7)A couple of comments, We have seen RRD on a large bed of Dr. Huey in the spring, and it's not red, but the green Round-up look alike, and by fall, it was no longer RU lookalike but much, much worse. In the background, it looks as if the nearby fenceline was sprayed with a herbicide with an automated sprayer that took out about 18" of grass, etc. It was so hot this summer that most herbicides' volatility was enhanced. And all of these problems seem to have come up midsummer onwards. I don't think I see any symptoms of the a problem that was there in spring, and then came in even worse recently. But I am not certain. What I do know is that I'd take the sick canes off and wait. They aren't going to get better looking in the next two years even if it's ONLY round up. The folks at the Vineyard might want to send samples to the plant disease lab at Virginia Tech (attention Mary Anne Hanson) and she could check for eriophyid mites which could be expected to have higher concentrations if it's RRD....See Morericvek
