Have caesalpinia pulcherrima (Pride of Barbados/ Red Bird of Paradise)

I have tons of seed pods if anyone is interested. They sprout easily after nicking and soaking in wet paper towel. Also, how long should I wait to put 3 inch high seeslings in the ground?

What color are the flowers? I have one fuchsia and would like to have two more to go with it.

Good choice! You know, if you can keep it watered, it's fine to plant it right now, yes, even in sun. If not, then keeping it in partial shade for a month or even three is just fine. When I plant them in the middle of summer, I'll water them every day for a week, then every other day for a week, then probably two times a week through winter. After their first winter, they get one good, deep soak a week when it's hot. They'll be fine if you plant them, as long as you can keep them watered. If you want to wait, then they'll be fine for quite a few months in partial shade. Tell your wife she made a good choice. :) Let us know what you do and how it works out! Take care, Grant

Marcie, those are beautiful. Mine have not bloomed yet but your pictures sure help. I thought the cold killed mine too and they were slow to come back. You might be thinking of the difference between Mexican Bird of Paradise and Pride of Barbados. They look very similar, but are slightly different plants that are often called the same. The Mexican Bird of Paradise is Caesalpinia Mexicana and the Pride of Barbados is Caesalpinia Pulcherrima. Yours look like Pride of Barbados with the red/yellow flower. Wow, You all know your trees :) SJN, you're right it is also known as the Mexican Bird of Paradise. :) Karyn, you're right, the Royal Poinciana is like the Big Brother of the P.O.B aka: Mexican Bird of Paradise. Here I thought I found a unique plant. ROFL :) Lucy, If I get any seeds this year I will share :). HD sold this one at $15. We've had those leftover bricks for I don't know how many years and I decide to use them this year. I was just experimenting using them around the nursery pots. But hey, if they look good I may leave them there. The pool LOL yep, it's rather hard to take pics without getting the pool in there. It's right spack in the middle. Deb

I posted this. Halfwaythere1. It seems I clicked to sign in from facebook lol. Inbox me your addresses and I'll send you both a bunch of pods. I have so many! It seems every flower turns to multiple pods after it dies. Is this normal? I'm overloaded. One popped while I was passing by and it scared the bejeezus out of me. They are the standard reddish/orange. Really beautiful.

I'd like some, but I don't understand how to send my address. To answer your question: maybe personal taste, but I would wait for more root growth and sturdier seedling, especially with the hard rains here lately.

Irma, I don't think you have your settings set to send and receive private messages. Once you change it, when you click on my name there will be a "message" button near the top right.

Your Houzz, Edit Profile, Advanced Settings
At the bottom where it says Who can message me, select Anyone can message me from the dropdown box.
