blue spruce in container (also posted in conifers forum)

We bought this blue spruce for the holidays. Unfortunately, perhaps from being inside, a few branches died, but now it appears to be doing better and has some new growth.

It is now outside on a southwest facing balcony. It'd like to pot it in a larger container. Any advice on the size container (either the smaller or larger red one; the white one with stripes is now taken)?

Also, any advice on types of mix? Most of my indoor plants are in some version of 1/3rd pine bark, black lava rock, pumice, turface, or granigrit. I've seen in these forums that others have had success with conifers by mixing some soil conditioner and miracle grow potting mix into this. My concern is that pure gritty mix might be too dry in the hot summer? (zone 7a/7b). Should I still pot now even with new growth (there is even more now than in the picture)?

Thanks!
